A compilation of “old players” calling Michael Jordan in the GOAT in May 1993.

The players featured are Julius Erving, Jerry West, Elgin Baylor, Magic Johnson, Bob Cousy, Connie Hawkins.

It’s interesting how when people talked how great Jordan was it had almost nothing to do with “how many rings” he had and really total accolades in general. It was more about how he was playing at a higher level than everyone else in the league including those before him.

It’s always been about play. People who make it about stats and rings probably don’t watch. And there’s plenty of footage to watch

  2. gigglios

He was considered the goat by basically everyone who ever watched by 92. Not much has changed since.

  3. Al-4Touchdowns-Bundy

He had the skills, the style, the stats, and the accolades to show for it. Definitely still the greatest of all time.

  4. imsurethisoneistaken

The only old heads that don’t say Jordan is the goat are notorious haters like Pippen and Dr J.

  5. Buckeye_CFB

It makes sense, because *at the time* he was the best player ever

  6. 0590plazaj

He was the goat then. He might still be. His style and nature are what puts him there. It’s hard to compare stats and championships era to era.

I watched Jordon. I’ve watched more Lebron. Lebron is the more complete player. But Jordon is the guy I want with the ball in the 4th quarter.

This will never be settled until Jokic retires with 7 championships and is the undisputed goat haha

  7. Cold_Carpenter_1798

I am shocked to hear they didn’t think LeBron was the goat by that point

  8. halfdecenttakes

Another day, another group of people who do not define greatness by the number of rings.

Tell me again how Lebron isn’t better than this guy? Better offensive player, more impactful defender. Seems pretty straight forward

  9. Although as time goes on, more and more people will pick LeBron as the the better one. Because future generations never got to watch these star players in a game, so they’ll only judge by stats and awards, which LeBron has more of.

“…on top of that enormous physical package”

    Pause, Jerry

  11. sneedmarsey

Don’t worry nick wright says that lebron is better so that makes it even

  12. BigMik_PL

    People are missing the point.

These are all enormous egos and insane trash takers all in unison saying MJ is on another level. Magic and Bird were the biggest icons of the NBA at the moment and once MJ dropped 60 on Larry in playoffs with a team that would put process Sixers to shame he was like “oh fuck”.

It’s the equivalent of Shaq, Duncan, Kobe, Garnett, Scalabrine all coming out saying “yeah LeBron is the clear GOAT”.

Which none of them did because they also played against MJ. Those are legit people that played against aging Jordan and prime LeBron and went “nah not even close”.

But nephews will refuse it because it’s the wrong narrative.

  13. The MJ/LBJ comparison is similar to the Messi/Ronaldo comparison. I don’t how you could watch MJ or Messi and think anyone is even close. Like someone else said it’s not even about the stats or accolades just the physical and mental ability is otherworldly.

  14. DEEZLE13

Little did they know the real goat was coming in 10 years

  15. dizzymidget44

Them same players will watch Steph do a behind the back side step from 40 feet and say the game is soft

  16. LarBrd33

I like that Walton was like, “There’s no difference in my opinion between Bird, Magic and Jordan aside from teammates” and then he says he has Bill Russell #1, likely because of the ring count. It’s a valid take. Can’t deny that Jordan’s the greatest of his era, but a part of his success had to do with the Celtics, Lakers and Pistons aging out, the fact he had another MVP-level talent as a running-mate (Pippen won 55 games the year Jordan was retired), the fact that he league had watered down by adding 6 teams during his championship stretch, etc, but he was undeniably amazing.

We done with the 90’s, ya boomer. Og fr skibidi rizz

  18. CrossDeSolo

That 90’s video editing and music was so bad. Interviews were great tho

  19. georgelamarmateo

    MAGIC IS SO HANDSOME

I GUESS THERES A DOWNSIDE TO EVERYTHING

  20. One of the biggest challenges for MJ in the goat debate is that he came before Lebron, and that he was very much crowned as the GOAT before he even retired the first time.

Because of this, MJ had no one to chase, no real accolades to feel he needed to meet, or anything left to prove relatively early in his career. Once he got #6, he had the bragging rights over his good friend Magic, and probably didn’t care to achieve much else. At that point, Kareem’s scoring record meant nothing in terms of MJ’s ability, especially because he had the highest PPG ever (over Wilt) and the record 10 scoring titles.

Knowing MJ’s competitive spirit, who knows what he would have achieved had he had something or someone to still chase in his 30s.

  21. GeneralLou15

That “simply the best” Montage music had me rolling.

  22. Panik_Switch

I get it. Put up otherworldy numbers in the 80s, and the only slight was he wasnt winning championships.

Here he was well on his way to winning his 3rd in a row. Nothing else you could really say.

  23. PensiveinNJ

    pre-rangz culture.

But also Jordan being in the goat is… slightly more disturbing than being the GOAT.

  24. It was one of those things that when you watched him compete against players at the time, and the league was loaded in the late 80s early 90s…..he was just so much better than everyone else. He was just different, and you knew every time that he was gonna bust someone’s ass.

  25. GayForJamie

I had a copy of a Pistons/Bulls game from the 89 season, and the Pistons announcing team called MJ the best ever during it. Years before a title.

  26. zdiddy987

Peter Vesci looking New York underworld / grimey as fuck haha

  27. trash___house

I remember being a kid thinking Micheal Jordan was good but I never got to see the best player ever, Magic Johnson

  28. KennethHaight

It’s crazy that people my age grew up with Jordan and Gretzky in the leagues. Truly the best players in North American team sports of all time, still unsurpassed. It’s a bit of a shame, I’d love to see players in either sport come close to that level of dominance in my lifetime just to watch.

  29. jl_theprofessor

Bill Walton sounding slightly annoyed scares me.

  30. Man MJ and Bron stans are legit better than some presedential candidates in campaigning about their goat.

  31. HS941317

There’s nothing like Michael Jordan from the late 80’s to 1993. He was also amazing in the second threepeat but goddamn was he something else in that first threepeat. The highest level a basketball player has played was early 90’s Michael Jordan. Took the league to another level and was one of the top 3-5 most famous individual on earth

  32. Throwingdad

As I kid I remember everyone calling him the best ever during his first retirement. It was based in his skill, clutch performances, athleticism and unbeatable will. We all know the past now, but he seemed to be able to create victory himself when he played. It was incredible.

  33. dragonwhale

This video shouldnt be titled with “GOAT”. They are clearly talking BEST. As in BOAT. Which is different.

MJ definitely was and is the best player the world has ever seen even before his rings but the winning made him the GOAT too.

If MJ had retired with 2 rings or something like that then Kareem, Lebron or Bill would be the GOAT. But MJ would still be the BOAT.

MJ’s 6 rings on top of the best play in history far outweighs Bill Russell’s 11 rings however.

But if Lebron who is among the closest to MJ’s play would have won 8 rings then he would have become the GOAT.
