Seeking to lure the Philadelphia 76ers across the river, New Jersey is offering up to $400 million in tax credits and outlining plans for a sprawling mixed-use waterfront development.

In a letter dated Monday, Gov. Phil Murphy’s administration said it envisioned a multibillion-dollar plan in the city of Camden featuring residential, commercial and retail properties, with the Sixers as an anchor.

The pitch from Economic Development Authority CEO Tim Sullivan comes as the team and Philadelphia negotiate over a future $1.3 billion arena the team had announced for the city’s Chinatown neighborhood. The team has said it doesn’t plan to stay at the Wells Fargo Arena in the city’s stadium district past 2031 when its lease is up.

The Sixers, which already have a training complex and headquarters facility in Camden, called New Jersey’s offer “thoughtful and compelling,” though the team is still talking to Philadelphia leaders about a new arena in the city.

“The reality is we are running out of time to reach an agreement that will allow the 76ers to open our new home in time for the 2031-32 NBA season,” team spokesperson Molly Mita McEndy wrote in an email. “As a result, we must take all potential options seriously, including this one.”

  1. The Philadelphia 76ers (formerly Syracuse Nationals) should concentrate on winning a championship first. The drought is now at forty (40) years. 76 Place will displace hard working, blue collar citizens that my hometown has been known for. Ownerships through the years have employed individuals who could not draft. The Process of tanking was a disgrace for the entire city that will linger as a scar on the franchise forever. Look at the clowns (including the current owner) who have disgraced this franchise and you will know what I mean. I don't care if they move to the moon. This is all about building franchise value, nothing else. Plenty of time to tank again, Sixers, before 2031, go for it. I prefer to watch the Golden State (formerly Philadelphia) Warriors.

  2. Yes, Camden is technically New Jersey, but in reality it is east Philly. Also, their practice facility is located in Camden currently.

  3. China Town in Philly is not "nice". It would definitely upgrade the area. Camden would be a horrible idea.

  4. Just about everyone in the area knows Camden is a no go unless it's the Riverfront/Aquarium area. There isn't much space for an arena down there either.

  5. The Sixers crossing the Delaware? Thou intriguing, it sounds almost likely as the Chiefs moving to Kansas.

That move may spur more growth on the east bank, but it appears there are only two bridges to cross the Delaware to get there.

  6. Your piece gives a very distorted view of the 76'ers situation. Were it not for a state line being involved this is more of a "which neighborhood" are were going to be in. The proposed Philly location is about 2.25 miles from their existing Training Complex, a 125,000-square-foot athletic facility and office building in Camden, New Jersey, which houses the training center and corporate offices of the Philadelphia 76ers of the National Basketball Association. So this is not a radical relocation for the team or moving away from their existing fan base. This not the Philadelphia Warriors moving out in 1963. This distance from their existing arena to the proposed Chinatown location and to their existing practice facility in Camden is about the same.

  7. The Wells Fargo Center and TD Garden are almost twin arenas on the inside minus the paint scheme. The Celtics seem perfectly happy in an identical building. I know the Sixers rent the arena basically but it's not like they are still playing in the Spectrum.
