The Golden State Warriors are reportedly not interested in offering Jonathan Kuminga a max extension

“The Warriors aren’t currently prepared to give Kuminga a max extension (like the five-year, $224-million deal Franz Wagner got from the Orlando Magic that will start at 25 percent of the cap) or anything that stretches too close to that $44.8 million annual salary, league sources said.”

  1. Hypothetically who do they risk losing him to if they don’t pay him a max

  2. vwb2022

No need to rush, he will be an RFA in 2025/26 and so they can let him test the market and match any offers he gets. It doesn’t make for a best relationship with a player, but I’d be doing the same thing.

  3. NoLimitSoldier31

No team should pay Kuminga a max

  4. DomoSaysHello

Only Detroit, Brooklyn and Charlotte are crazy enough to compete to sign him when he hits the open market because they have a stupid enough front office and cap space to do this.

  5. the_next_core

I personally haven’t seen him playing like a max player but maybe someone has. He’s solid, he’s got great potential but he’s not there yet. Almost the same situation as Poole.

  6. Icee_Veena

I wouldnt either. Max contracts shouldn’t be based on hype. Skews the market.

As the most casual of casual fans I’ve been reading about this guy being an emerging star for what feels like five or six years now. I’m also completely baffled that a guy who has averaged 12 points a game in his career would even be considered for a max.

Had he been drafted by Detroit or Washington and had started the past three years on a bad team would he have been in consideration for a max contract?

  9. 2nd_Tinder_Date

too many players are getting max for average performances and fking up teams’ salary cap

let these role players flow through different teams like they used to

only superstars and real all-star potential players deserve max contract

If Kuminga wants to be disgruntled because the Warriors don’t max him? Fk him then.

Don’t cave in and max someone like Andrew Wiggins only to have him play like shit the season right after an extension.

I rather see Jokic and Steph get paid 70M.

  10. Diddleyourfiddle

Draymond better not punch him, thereby forcing the team to give him the max between now and the end of the season

  11. Paralta

Why tf would they? I remember when max contracts were reserved for stars 😂

  12. curiousrabbit510

Why would he deserve a max extension?

  13. WetShots

He like a $20 mil a year max kind of player

  14. pretzeldoggo

One of those guys that is more valuable to the Warriors because of Steph, than he would be on another team.

I dont think any team realidticly is intrested in offering Kuminga the max.

Like the mans got talent and a few years ago he mighthave been able to get it.

But with the CBA as it is now and with the state of the Warriors rn that cant really afford to go into the 2nd apron at all (cause they are gonna go into a rebuild in the next couple of years once Steph retires at the lastest).

I agree with everyone that he hasn’t shown himself to be a max player. I also would understand if JKs frustrated because he’s been given inconsistent playing time. Did he deserve more minutes? That’s the debate where I don’t think JK will see eye to eye with Kerr or the organization.

  17. awibasedgod

If I was GS I would be working to see if Portland would do a deal around Kuminga and Wiggins for Grant

  18. _Tar_Ar_Ais_

Buminga needs to get a wake up call

  19. At some point the league has to stop giving mediocre players max contracts. This is a good thing.

  20. OddBank9124

If the kid has a breakout year this year and becomes an all star then maybe. So far he hasn’t shown himself to be on the same level as Scottie Barnes, or Cade Cunningham.

  21. SnooStrawberries7894

Leak like this probably just want to lit a fire under his butt, if they can make a number 2 out of him, that’s a win.

  22. Zeeron1

The handing out of max contracts nowadays is insane. This shouldn’t even be a conversation. I don’t know what kind of market reset needs to happen, or what would even trigger it, but the market is pretty clearly fucked

  23. Unstep-in-Time

Max deals are one of the dumbest things in sports. Pay a guy what you think he’s worth, and all teams should have the same opportunity. Now, well this team can pay this amount and no team can match it BS. And players who haven’t done much getting $50-$60 mill a year is crazy.

  24. PapaCologne

I can’t imagine Kuminga turning into a superstar. I could be totally wrong as he’s got a lot of potential, but I don’t personally think he’s anywhere close to the value of a max extension.

  25. bball_nostradamus

Warriors don’t be dumb just rebuild after curry declines and retires. Kuminga ain’t that guy

  26. dangerousunicorn10

Smart move he’s not a max player for a team that wants to compete for championships
