Cam Thomas contract extension. Is it now, later or never for the Brooklyn Nets?

Cam Thomas contract extension. Is it now, later or never for the Brooklyn Nets?

Cam Thomas is eligible for a contract extension heading into this season, but what will end up happening here for both him and the team? It’s an interesting situation, considering the Brooklyn Nets might not be interested in getting a deal done now, but Thomas is going into what could be a breakout year.

He’s among the leaders in NBA scoring title odds and could put up massive numbers. But how do teams see his overall value? And what do the Nets think about it?

  1. My take: If you can’t pay your own homegrown player… a guy who’s waited his turn, kept his head down and just hooped, then what’s the point? Grass is not always greener. Who else are you going to pay?

  2. 1 thing i don’t think is being accounted for is what happened last year and what’s going on now. Last year it was clear JV didn’t really want to play CT but he was basically forced to. I’m sure a lot of it was CT’s merit but how much of it was marks pushing for it?

On top of that, marks credibility raises a lot if CT hits so his development and ultimately being a long term part of the franchise at this stage is definitely something marks would want.

  3. There shouldn't be an urgency to extend Cam Thomas contract before the end of next season. His overall game is on trial. Will it improve next season? The Nets should be willing to wait and see after next season.

  4. When he averages 30 points. 5 assists and 5 rebounds. Then when you dont sign him now and he gets 30+ million a year next year.

  5. I understand the other side, there's a big debate about whether or not Cam Thomas is a winning player, but if he's averaging 26 points and 5 assists and the efficiency is around league average, that basically ends most of the negatives associated around his game. There's a salary floor that the Nets have to reach, it just makes sense for the Nets to pay him instead of using the money on free agents just to fill up the cap sheet.

If we're talking about this current version of Cam, then I agree he's not worth a max, and he's probably worth around $20-25M per year. I know there's a concern that he's just putting up the numbers cause he has the opportunity, the problem with that argument is that you can use that argument with any player that puts up big numbers that isn't on a winning team. I'm interested to see what happens, but if Cam takes a real leap, it's going to be difficult to justify not paying him a near max

  6. You can’t pay Cam Johnson and then skip on paying Cam Thomas atleast a similar salary. He’s homegrown, waited his turn, tolerated the disrespect, led the team in scoring, and has the higher ceiling not just out of the two players but the whole team. He’s earned a good pay day

  7. @Doug Norrie I don’t think Maxey and Jordan Clarkson are the right comps for Cam (though this season may prove one of them are) I think the better comps would be Tyler Herro and Jordan Poole (prior to his atrocious last year lol). When I looked up those salaries they both are making 29 mil.

Tbh that sounds about Cam’s worth in the new CBA but I think unless he goes crazy this year they would be able to get him for slightly less. I would say for the current trajectory the right amount for Cam would be 25 mil a year same as Clax

  8. For me, I would love the nets to do right by a homegrown talent and try to get a team friendly deal done because at minimum Cam Thomas is proven that he’s a microwave scorer and that’s incredibly valuable. Somewhere like four years $90 million makes a lot of sense and even if you wanted to move him down the road that’s a reasonable contract. Especially since you just gave Cam Johnson that type of contract . However, I can also see the nets saying why do we need to do anything? He is a restricted free agent. We’re gonna have a lot of money and if he balls out and we have to end up paying him more then we’ll do it but end of the day the nets control weather Cam Thomas is here long-term regardless.
