David Aldridge on the Miami Heat’s 2023 offseason: “They were in on Bradley Beal. Beal said ‘Nah. I wanna go to Phoenix.’” […] “They wanted Beal. He just said no.”

Goodwill: “I was really curious that the Heat didn’t go all in on Damian Lillard, all in on Bradley Beal…”

Aldridge: “They were in on Bradley Beal. Beal said ‘Nah. I wanna go to Phoenix.’” […] “They wanted Beal. He just said no.”

Found this interesting, as it was previously reported that Beal was primarily interested in getting traded to Miami, but the Heat bowed out when he refused to lift his no-trade clause after getting traded to Miami.

Now, David Aldridge (who is a longtime national NBA reporter based in DC) appears to confirm Beal was never really interested in coming to Miami.

I guess he thought Phoenix had a better chance of winning in the long run.

Their whole offseason this year is just odd.

No real traction on a Jimmy extension

No rumours at all in July about stars.

Huge bullet dodge by Miami. Beal’s a bum

Heat fans were so thirsty for him on twitter at the time lol

This is just false. Beal himself stated in a Marc Spears interview that Miami was his initial choice until Phoenix came in and were willing to let Beal keep the NTC.

    >So, my initial favorite was Miami. And so, we call Miami. [Miami president] Pat [Riley] says well I’ll go talk to [owner] Micky [Arison] and figure it out. So he goes, talks to Micky, we go, we hear back [New York] Knicks, Sacramento, Brooklyn a little bit, and then it was Milwaukee and it was one more big team … And that was kind of one of the most difficult things about every trade and every team. And I respect and love every team, but a lot of them just couldn’t do it because the money was just so high.

    >I’m like, ‘OK, what’s Miami doing? Dragging feet.’ And eventually it came to a point to where Miami said they just can’t do it. But it was an eye-opener for sure. And that’s why I said I went into everything kind of open-minded and with an open slate. And out of nowhere here comes a dark horse in Phoenix and their aggressiveness pushed me over the top. Milwaukee was very close in the running as well, but they were going to make some moves that I didn’t necessarily like in the trade, too. So, I guess that’s the beauty of having a no-trade clause. You get to have a little bit of say-so in the deal. Having so many teams pursuing me so hard was really cool. But in the end, man, it ultimately just felt like Phoenix picked me.

  6. I wanted to see Beal on Miami I think he’s underrated when healthy, but hence the health

  8. background_action92

Very weird that this is being said when Beal himself said he was waiting on the Heat to pull the trigger but Pat told him thay it was on mickey

  9. ? didnt bradley beal say himself that he asked about miami but they gave him the “we want u but we cant” thing?

A ntc not being offered is a weird reason not to choose a team unless you’re not fully committed to the team’s culture or expectations.

  12. Is it weird to think the Beal situation might’ve been better in Miami? Not really thinking about what actually would’ve been sacrificed to make the trade happen but Beal being the legit shooter/scorer for that team would’ve really helped them out a lot. Jimmy is great and he’s the guy but they don’t really have a go to shooter who’s actually splashing it at a star caliber level (sorry Tyler Herro).

If we’re being honest Miami dodged a bullet even if it just proves Riley is washed and can’t get any stars to come to the Heat anymore, he couldn’t even get Dame who point blank said he wanted to play for Miami and Riley fucked that up too playing hardball thinking Portland had no choice but to trade him for peanuts

Time for the Heat to move on from Riley
