Can Joe Mazzulla dial back the intensity and accept early Boston Celtics losses?
Joe Mazzulla is incredibly intense and obsessed with winning, but the Celtics might face some early bumps without Kristaps Porzingis. They might also start the season limiting the minutes of his core players, but does Mazzulla have the discipline to do so if it means a few more losses early in the year? John Karalis of Boston Sports Journal discusses that, why the bench is so important, and the conversation they need to have with Tatum especially to make Joe’s life easier.

All I’m gonna say is, Joe hates losing possibly more than winning. I know those losses to Atlanta were infuriating, but it was a regular season game that didn’t realistically affect the outcome of who’d win the East, but Joe cared. I have no doubt that Joe will treat every game the same, like he’s done before.
Dial only goes one way LFG ☘️☘️☘️

Passion can’t be extinguished that easily. I’m fine with Joe as he is. Treat every game like a must win? Fine by me. ☘️🔒
Remember how a lot of us criticized Joe his first season as HC over his rotations? That quieted down this past season. Same with his calling time outs. He's really come a long way and most of us trust him now.
As someone who takes lessons from other sports, Joe should know that you don’t burn yourself out in the first few minutes of a fight. That’s a sure way to lose in the long run.
We don't want him to dial back the intensity, we just have to trust that the intensity is going to be directed in the right direction. The goals for the team in the early season are different than the ones late in the season and into the playoffs. We want joe to care about getting guys healthy, about making sure we're playing the right way, about coming up with new sets counters. And we want him to do it in the only way he knows how
Joe can use a deep flexible bench with their deep talent to win 🥇 and develop talent while maintaining a rested team. No need to compromise in this regard. The young players will benefit from the intensity. Mostly straw man arguments— your greatest strength is just that not a weakness.
