IHart's departure is so huge for this team, from the defense, DHO's, the passing, and the reliable push shot from the paint when the play breaks down and you need a shot with 2 seconds on the shot clock. Yes he could have signed a 5-year, $269 million deal, but instead with a 3-year, $117 million deal, with an opt-out clause in the fourth year, he'll have 10 years of experience and can potentially sign a 5-year, $439 million deal. This means he'll earn $556.56 million over 8 years, compared to the $557 million he would have made with the original 5-year deal extended to 8 years for comparison.
So, in reality, he's probably giving up around $1million in today’s money but stands to make $10s of millions more over the next 8 years this way.
Nothing wrong with a player doing that but let’s not spread misinformation.
