BASKETBALL Like NEVER Before at Panathenaic Stadium | EUROLEAGUE Preseason SHOW

The world’s only stadium built entirely out of marble hosted the 6th Pavlos Giannakopoulos Tournament. The Panathenaic Stadium, home of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896, became the place to be for basketball fans for one evening. More than 40,000 fans gathered to witness EuroLeague basketball. Players from Maccabi Tel Aviv, Partizan Belgrade, Efes, and host Panathinaikos entered through the players’ tunnel, where gladiators once walked this ancient, subterranean passage. It was an unfamiliar venue but filled with iconic moments throughout 4 hours of EuroLeague basketball.

We were there to witness this historic basketball event alongside journalist Deniz Aksoy, filmmaker Devin Williams, TikTokers from sbb_UK, EuroLeague legends, players, and Coach Ataman’s son, who had a camera embedded on the team’s bench.

    The stadium was originaly built by Lykourgos in 400 BC and then rebuild in marble by The Athenian Roman Senator Herodus of Atticus. It was nearly abandoned during the Byzantine era and eventually excavated and refurbished in 1969 in order to host the 2nd Greek Olympiad(for Greeks only) in 1870 and 1875 which was some of the oldest sports events in Europe. The 1st modern Global Olympic games were hosted there in 1896 and it hosted again the 1906 Olympics from which you can find videos in youtube. It was used again in the Olympics of 2004. Perhaps the biggest event that took place in the Panathinaic Stadium apart from the Olympics was the wrestling events of the Greek Jim Londos the biggest catch wrestling star in the world during the 30s and 40s when he drew a crowd of nearly 100,000 fans. Unfortunately i could not be there for this event as i was out of Athens but all of you guys who were there i hope you enjoyed it.
