The Heat are not trying to seriously compete right now. They know that.
They see the arms race going on in the East and are not in the position to get involved because of years of bad asset management and contracts.
Them unwilling to hand Jimmy a max right now might be the smartest thing they’ve done in a while. They know once this arms race is over, they will be positioned to compete with younger, hopefully healthier players.
And Bam will be at the core still.
I love Jimmy. I don’t want him to leave. But Pat and company are justified in not automatically maxing him at age 35 with a bad injury history virtually every playoffs despite the heroics and everything he has done.
They kinda fucked up the Jimmy era with the teams they built around him. But Jimmy also couldn’t ever stay healthy in these runs, along with other players.
2020 was the year to win. Jimmy was healthy, relatively young, and playing ridiculous ball against LeBron. But fate decided Dragic and Bam had to get hurt. And that’s a damn shame.
