This New OKC Thunder Will Change How NBA Defense Is Played

The NBA season is about to begin and the OKC Thunder are expected to be one of the contenders to battle for an NBA championship. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams, and Chet Holmgren form the Thunder’s big three, while they also have new additions in Alex Caruso and Isaiah Hartenstein who further solidifies OKC’s claim as championship contenders. The Boston Celtics have shown that defense still wins in the NBA. They beat Luka Doncic, Kyrie Irving and the Dallas Mavericks. Nikola Jokic and the Nuggets were also upset by the defensively loaded Minnesota Timberwolves. Could the Oklahoma City Thunder be the next defensive juggernaut to win the Nba title?

The Thunder were already one of the best offensive teams in the league and they were the 4th best defense last season behind the Timberwolves, Celtics, and Magic. But GM Sam Presti has further strengthened the Thunder roster this offseason. They already had Lu Dort, Jalen Williams, Chet Holmgren and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander who even finished 7th in DPOY Voting behind Victor Wembanyama. But the offseason additions of Caruso and Hartenstein should make the Thunder more formidable against Minnesota now that Karl Anthony-Towns was traded to New York. OKC should also be more capable of battling Jokic and the Denver Nuggets.

NBA media day shows us a ton of new rosters but OKC definitely has one of the deepest teams in the league this upcoming season. It is their identity that could set them apart from the rest of the NBA especially against conference rivals such as the Dallas Mavericks, Phoenix Suns, Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves, or even the Golden State Warriors. Because of the boom in league scoring, the OKC Thunder might not register a defensive rating comparable to the 04 Pistons or the 08 Celtics with Kevin Garnett, but they could change the way NBA defense is played with how talented their roster is.
