Towns’ contract is massive and he hasn’t shown to be worth building around as the guy. Randle’s clearly less valuable than Towns but he’s still a very good player and DiVincenzo is a great role player on a good contract. It feels like a win win trade to me.

The knicks will appreciate having a good 5 that can shoot and contract concerns aren’t as important to them. It gives the wolves an opportunity to pivot with Randle’s contract expiring and it’s definitely a riskier move for the wolves than the knicks I’d say but I could see it working out well for them.

It gives the Wolves more options I think and some value flexibility more than anything

  3. ilickedysharks

I expect most Executives definitely value getting off Towns contract as a bigger positive than fans do.

  4. Relo_bate

If they’re gonna flip Randle then it’s a good move in the long run, if they’re gonna try and make Randle a key piece then I’m not expecting much

  5. Extra_Bend_551

KAT already peaked years back and the fact that Minn could unload him for valuable pieces is very nice. Usually these dudes sorta fizzle out and end up leaving in FA.

  6. You can’t make a fair assessment of the trade until we see what the Wolves end up doing with Randle and his expiring contract.

  7. jimbo_kun

Do you think part of it is to give Naz Reid more minutes?

I’m not surprised, KAT widely isn’t viewed as a winner, and when you add DiVincenzo and also that Pistons first round pick, when you add potential flexibility in the future, not a surprise many execs think the Wolves won this.

Julius can really play and the Wolves added a shooter while also adding more creation in Julius. They will look different this season but that certainly doesn’t mean worse. Interested to see how it plays out.

  9. It was pretty even but if anybody won it’s twolves

I think the wolves need to flip Randle for something nice in order to win this trade.

I just don’t see Randle’s schtoyle fitting in with Edwards and Gobert.

  11. Broad-Part9448

IDK. From the Knicks perspective I feel they don’t think they can win a championship with Randle. So keeping him is a losing proposition already. At least with this trade they have a shot at something else worth trying. That’s got to be a win.

  12. DiscreteBee

Initially I thought this was a clear Knicks win but the more I’ve thought about it I’ve come around to seeing what the wolves are going for.

I still think it’s good for the Knicks though.

How? None of these players have even been on the court yet

And we got depth but it’s unclear how Randle will fit.

We already had a known commodity – a WCF team with a co-star who worked next to Ant and Rudy. Sure there’s more cap flexibility but there’s no trophy for “flexibility”. The actual team is an unknown commodity now. All-NBA stars are so much harder (let alone one that fits) to find then role players like Naz and NAW. If Randle walks, sure there’s “cap flexibility” but Ant has no All-NBA 2nd option co-star

can’t wait for the Conley Ant McDaniels Randle Rudy. its gonna be great in the modern NBA

  15. Be sure to cite their take on the Rudy trade just after it happened as context for this current quick opinion.

  16. Donte had one of the best contracts in the league. And as others have mentioned, kat’s contract is kinda the opposite. Wolves got more depth…idk, this doesmt surprise me

  17. Pyritedust

Why does Brian Windhorst always look like he’s just coming off his pet dying? Dude needs a non-serious fun vacation.

  18. fastheadcrab

They are viewing it as a successful salary dump that happened to get a very good role player in DiVicenzo without otherwise giving up anything. From that point of view it was an unqualified success.

To me, the more important question is whether salary dumping KAT before this season was worth it from a success standpoint. Maybe they are gambling it won’t be much of a loss with Naz Reid in KAT’s place. They couldve salary dumped KAT after the season and gotten less in return, but have they limited their ceiling this year instead?

Randle is underrated at this point, he’s a legit 20 and 10 guy. And he’s got that dog in him LAT doesnt. Same with Divencio, he can shoot the lights out. I honestly think it was a good trade for both teams

  20. RaspberryOk2240

Hard to listen to him when he takes a deep breath after every sentence

  21. agoginnabox

KAT’s games played last five years:

    35

    50

    74

    29

    62

What KAT is still owed: 4/224m

The Wolves sold high in getting an all-NBA level player, either the best or 2nd best(Deni) non-rookie, non-superstar contract and a mystery box draft pick. Nobody other team in the NBA was coming close to this package and another injury riddled season and age 30 looming might very well have put this contract underwater and that might very well have killed the team through ANT’s early prime.

It’s almost always better to get off a year early than a year late.

    100%

The night this trade was made public, that’s exactly what I said. Wolves win.

Randle is a champ, plays hard on both ends. Injuries have gotten the better of him. Compounded with Brunsons explosion and commanding the team, it was probably challenging for him to accept the role reduction. I know same can be said for Ant and KAT.

I just think Randle will gel better now, knowing without a doubt he’s the second option. I think mentally he will approach this better than KAT. I also don’t think KAT fits in Thibbs defensive scheme well at all.

Icing on the cake, DiVincenzo makes the wolves even deeper at point which should pair nicely with the aging Conely.

  23. SirochMusic

Someone pointed out Windys breathing when he talks and now I can’t listen to him anymoren

  24. Lots of Wolves fans wanted to get rid of KAT but I think we’ll struggle out of the gate. Long term this trade gives the Wolves financial flexibility, which is one of the most valuable assets in the NBA today. Executives know this so I’m not surprised they favor this trade for the Wolves.

  25. eugoogilizer

I feel like both teams benefitted. KAT is definitely the best player of the trade, an upgrade over Randle, and a good fit for the Knicks. Randle is also very solid and I feel underrated by almost everyone on Reddit lol. He’s not as good as KAT, that’s obvious, but the Wolves also got a key piece in DiVicenzo. He had a great year with the Knicks, was trending toward being the odd man out over there and unhappy, and gives the Wolves an additional perimeter scorer to compliment Edwards and Randle. I don’t really see this as a loss for either team, but only time will tell

  26. diabetbro

lol more like Brian Windedhorst on the Kat-Randle trade

  27. larrylegend33goat

All the recent Timberwolves trades, FA signings and draft picks have been pretty good. Something is going on in Minnesota

  28. CaptainJackJ

Towns gets traded and the hive mind instantly forgets all the “defensive liability” and “poor clutch decision making” arguments that have defined the last 3 years of Towns conversation.

  29. windhorst has been glazing the wolves for a whole year now

  30. cajun_vegeta

KAT is on crazy money + that DiVincencso contract + better fit = T wolves win

  31. Who’s the guy in the studio that looks like Satya Nadella

  32. ejw123456789

Yeah. Fans don’t understand value for money very well

  33. krispyfroglegs

There’s basketball value and then there’s business value, we all forget about that second one.
