Donte is the exact player the wolves needed last season when we played the Mavs. Yes Kat was good against Joker, but so was Naz and I think Randle will be able to replicate the game plan, he’s also about the same weight as Kat so I don’t think Joker can bully him. We have to remember Connelly probably knows Joker better then most evaluators in the league, as he drafted him, and was around for his development. He has insight in how to stop him, and Finch coached Randle down in NO so I’m sure he has a good idea of what Randle is capable of. This move wasn’t just financial, the wolves are a better, and deeper team than last year. Too many times last season teams just had to guard ant and Kat. Donte is that third option that means defenses can’t just shut down randle and ant. He also can hit from anywhere on the court with a quick release, which will stretch defenses and help with the spacing issues. I also think Randle will pick apart smaller mismatches when teams switch and that was just something Kat was never good at doing. In some ways Randle and Donte replicate the best parts of Kats games in outside shooting and post play, but split over two players so it’s actually harder to guard against.
I also think this is one of those rare trades that both teams get better. Kat will flourish in New York as hell be able to play the 5 and punish bigger defenders with his speed and shooting, while OG will replicate a lot of what Rudy did for the wolves.
Maybe I have Rose colored glasses but this move might honestly take both of these teams over the hump, and I would not be surprised if there is a potential Knicks Wolves series. NBA script writers honestly couldn’t ask for a better storyline to close out the season.
