Karl Anthony-Towns Thinks Public Scrutiny and Social Media Have Ruined The “Art” of The Dunk Contest

This is definitely one aspect of it. More eyes on the dunk contest means more are scared to become a “meme.”

Personally I don’t like dunk as a scoring short…But imho if a player successfully dunks it should be more than 2 points . May be 3.

Oh god I’m agreeing with KAT…

It’s not that more eyes are on it that scare players away. There are more people not in the league who are able to showcase their insanely technical dunks.

Those people can risk their bodies for the dunk contest, while actual players have to be a bit more reserved.

I’m afraid Kat isn’t old enough to remember the dunk contest accurately. There’s been like 5 good ones ever. None better than Zach Levine and Aaron Gordon. And that was all over the webs.

He’s not completely wrong but what really killed the dunk contest was stars opting out. Before LeBron a lot of the best players would compete but James was scared that if he didn’t win the contest it would tarnish his image so he never competed, which led to other big names sitting out. Now it’s literally g-leaguers and role players.

Infinite tries and props ruined the art of the dunk contest. It’s all jumping over cars and mascots. It needs to go back to the basics. Two attempts. No props.
