Mavericks Make A Roster Move + Jaden Hardy & Dereck Lively Impress In NBA Preseason | Mavs News
The Dallas Mavericks made a roster move on Tuesday, cutting A.J. Lawson from the roster. Lawosn was on a non-guaranteed contract for the 2024-25 NBA Season, which will leave Markieff Morris as the lone player to take the final spot on the Mavs’ roster. In other Mavs news, the 2024 NBA preseason was opened last night with a loss to the Memphis Grizzlies. Dereck Lively and Jaden Hardy highlights were prevalent, and Jaz Gortman also made his claim for the final two-way roster spot. Luka Doncic did not play in Mavs vs. Grizzlies, but he was voted the best point guard in the NBA via the NBA GM survey. Other Mavericks news is on the business side of the operation as Mavs CEO Cynt Marshall announced she will be retiring at the end of 2024.

Who impressed you most last night vs. Memphis?
While watching Gortman last night I knew Lawson's spot was over. 00 JG looked smooth and confident shooting 3s and the George "Ice Man" finger roll was beautiful. Gave me JJ Barea, Yogi Ferrell vibes.

Thought he looked good last night. Gortman stole the show IMO. He looked really good and with Exum hurt and the way SD played (not good). Hardy looked good.
Hardy deserves more time from what he proved in the playoffs he also isnt afraid to take shots. He just needed to improve his pg qualities and decision making, which it seems he did so far🤞

I think Lively will get most of the C starts, but Gaf will get a plenty of starts based on matchups and injuries. What matters most is who is called on to close the games. Both guys seem mature enough to handle whatever Kidd gives them.

Gortman was the most impressive
O-Max underwhelmed against opponents with similar experiences (rookies and sophomores). He played in the closing minutes of a close game. Yet, he did not performed. Plus, he had a lackluster performance in summer league. If he continues to struggle, he will next in line to be traded by trading deadline. He is the biggest disappointment.
G! Gaff has bulked up to match up better against Jokic, Zubac, Giannis and so on. More experience as well. Live should start full time year 3. He'll be more polished.
Lively looks like he is gonna defend the hell out of chet and wemby
One last thing… this team has 7 starters… easy… probably 8…
Kidd was recently quoted about Lawson, and it sounds like Lawson isn't returning to the team at all, even as a 2-way.
Imo it's the right move to let Lawson walk because after a couple of years, Lawson has shown nothing that's worth keeping him around. 2-ways should be reserved for giving guys a chance to show a flash of something, so after like 2 years, they show nothing, let them walk. You lose nothing letting 2-ways guys walk
I feel like Gafford plays better when he starts. Livily is the better player. And it does not matter whether he starts or not from a performance standpoint. But I think livily gets more minutes and finish the game. It’s more about getting the most of each guy. Not sure this can hold for long as livily ego will grow as he becomes a star. I feel livily this year or the next will be the second most important player next to Luka..
Hardy was the best player on the court and has proven time and time he can do this when actually given a shot. Gortman is one game so let’s pump the brakes.
You said it sounds like those injuries that those guys had (Klay and Kyrie) are nothing serious? Saying they have injuries is false information, unless I missed an injury announcement. I read they just sat out to rest. Most smart teams let their starters sit for the first pre season game if they’re not really needed. Ant sat out in the twolves first pre season game, so did Lebron, etc..

Gortman got some Terry Rozier in him( the way he finished not necessarily the handle/ moves…. I think 2 way spots if they can have 4 got to Miller, Gortman, Sharpe….
Lawson was never likely a long term piece for the Mavericks but I don't feel the love for Morris. No mater good a locker room presence he is I want someone, even the 15th spot, to be held by someone who can play.

HARDY PROMISING?!? Have you all watched the game?. His decision making was off. Lots of forced shots. It didnt show on his stats. He was an eye sore. He had the most playing time=compared to Gort (he is my man).
Precise, selective, no wasted movement.
Gort Ice was finesse.
HArdy is skilled no doubt BUT IF you waste your decisions with that rate, they got to rethink
