Should Boston Celtics start Luke Kornet over Al Horford until Kristaps Porzingis returns?

The Celtics are without Porzingis until, we think, sometime in December. The assumption was that Al Horford would just step into the starting lineup like he did in the playoffs, but the new season brings a new idea. Should the Celtics start Luke Kornet over Al Horford until Porzingis comes back? John Karalis of Boston Sports Journal and Tom Westerholm discuss the upside of going with Kornet, including the preservation of Horford’s minutes and consistency. And besides, this is only a temporary thing. Also, a quick discussion about the end of bench and who will be the 10th man.

  1. Start Luke. Aside from the obvious reason is keeping old Al fresher, you get Luke lifted up by the quality of players around him while Horford plays with the bench guys and is good enough to lift them up. So instead of the starters being a 10 and the bench being a 6, you get the starters being a 9 and the bench being a 7 and the team is more balanced. Also, Luke plays the interior closer to what KP does so it would be easier to get KP back in the fold when he returns.

  2. They've got a solid core of rotational big men that can do what is needed in that spot. Next man up mentality

  3. 8:02 you nailed this and it’s exactly what I’m always saying! With the continuity he’s built within our team this many years in , give me Luke surrounded by his brothers by his side any day! 💪🏾

  4. Luke has come a long way. Did not like his slowness (lumbering ways) a year ago. He improved month after month!

  5. @John Personally with Queta and Tilman if we could get away with it Id like to see Al rest til all star break….. how is Queta looking? He is the def first/rebounder that could be a nice fit with Luke/Tilman and of course Al. Thanks as always for the community

  6. Running through the bench made me realize how overqualified everyone is for their roles once KP comes back.

    Pritchard – 3rd guard
    Hauser – 8th man
    Kornet – 3rd big
    Tillman – 4th big

All these guys could provide other (good) teams more but we’re getting them to excel in more limited roles

  7. Yes, Luke would learn from the experience against other bigs/starting lineups.
First play of the season I'd have him pick n'pop. Just for the shock value.
