I miss him. He isn’t my favorite Laker, but he is the one who feels most like family. When Kobe was traded to the Lakers he was an 18-yo kid with stars in his eyes and fire in his belly. We had an inkling he was going to be special, but we could never have predicted how great he became and how much he would mean for our team and our city.
I met him in the NBC commissary the first time he came on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. He asked if he could try one of my fries and I gladly obliged. He was a sweet kid, and although I watched him in person throughout his career – from his first pre-season appearance to his final regular season game – I never met him again. And then he was gone.
He flew so goddamn high. Like Icarus. I’ll always remember him like this – soaring for a dunk, thundering the ball through the hoop, and infecting us with his passion.

It’s weird. I always think parasocial relationships are weird. He didn’t know me, I didn’t know him.
And then I remember the pic of 10 year old me falling asleep in a Kobe jersey and snuggling the basketball I got earlier that day for Christmas.
It’s crazy how much someone you’ve never interacted with can impact your life.
