Spurs Film Study: Has San Antonio Found the Second Coming of Danny Green?

Julian Champagnie has been a revelation for the Spurs this preseason, but can he maintain that momentum once the real deal begins?

  1. Love this. Was just saying this to someone on X/Twitter, maybe to Ty Jaeger, that perhaps the Spurs have unearthed their new Danny Green in Julian Champagnie, who's gotten better on defense and is shooting lights out right now on high volume. Definitely hope this carries over into the regular season… however, to make the passing of the torch complete, Julian will have to master Danny's chase down blocks, especially after a TO; Green seemingly always had that ability to recover for one after a bad play.

  2. While I don't know that he'll ever be Danny Green, I think Julian is exactly the type of competent 3&D player the Spurs need to fill their roster out with. I was impressed with him during the second half of last season, as it appeared he'd learned that consistency on defense was where things had to start for him if he was going to stay in the league. He's really put that and, so far this year, his shooting together nicely. While he and Danny Green have similarities, as you pointed out, Danny was one half of the best wing/perimeter defensive duo in the league alongside Kawhi. I'll hope that Julian reaches that level, but the good news is that his hard work on his game has already added so much to the Spurs depth regardless.

  3. Danny Green was 24 when he broke out and became a starter for the Spurs. Julian is 23, maybe he has the same kind of breakout year? Julian's defense and shooting is not where Green's was yet but I think Julian handles the ball better and has better court vision.
