[Bam Adebayo] on what makes a DPOY: “For me, it’s getting stops… Who can guard their yard? That’s 1-5, that’s in zone, that’s in whatever coverage your coach puts you in, you can excel in that coverage. That, to me, is the DPOY, but the media has different opinions — they look at steals and blocks.”

    Bam’s been using this dumb excuse for years. Steals and blocks are not why he’s hasn’t won.

    He’ll need the Heat to be a better defensive team.

    League rank in DRTG for the DPOY winner’s team and Bam’s team by year:

    * 2024: MIN 1, MIA 5
    * 2023: MEM 3, MIA 9
    * 2022: BOS 1, MIA 4
    * 2021: UTA 3, MIA 10
    * 2020: MIL 1, MIA 12
    * 2019: UTA 2, MIA 7
    * 2018: UTA 1, MIA 8

    This guy looking to cry into a dpoy like embid did mvp. AD is a better defender anyways

  3. watsonthedragon

    Does anyone talk about DPOY more than this guy?

  4. No_Competition4553

    I see this guy is going the Draymond route.

  5. austinkawada

    Why is he in full uniform for a podcast appearance?

  6. Ilikesporks_

    so gobert is the dpoy then cause he doesn’t really get steals or blocks but gets stops by simply existing in the paint

  7. Andy_Wiggins

    Wow, that’s surprising: Bam thinks defense is specifically what he’s good at (being versatile).

    Bam’s a great defender, but I hate the way people talk about his defense and why it deserves DPOY. Like, yes, he IS a better switch defender than Rudy Gobert. Duh. He’s 6’9” and Rudy’s 7’1”. But Rudy’s the better rim protector and rebounder. And Rudy has done a far better job of “getting stops” than Bam considering team defensive rating for the past decade.

    Player sharing his opinion on an award after being asked his opinion about the award

    r/nba: why he say fuck me?

  9. 693275001

    Bam really going for the media tour for a DPOY that will just go to Wemby anyways

  10. Impossible-Group8553

    Most dpoys aren’t stock leaders so that’s a bad take lol

  11. caulpain

    mj complained about the opposite problem in the 80s. he wanted them to just count his steals and blocks and let that be the deciding factor. stats.

  12. SandyMandy17

    Being able to be good in any type of defense is important

    If you’re only a shot blocker and you can’t hang in the perimeter all of a sudden you’re not that helpful

  13. Jrue is one of the best defenders of this generation but will never generate the attention say someone like White did last year because he doesn’t amass stocks. There’s plenty of defenders who are elite in the fundamentals but don’t go for the flashy plays.

  14. coacoanutbenjamn

    Lol it’s so easy to prove this wrong

  15. RVAIsTheGreatest

    The numbers say that Rudy’s impact defensively is greater than Bam’s impact in the regular season, so he’s viewed more highly on that end of the floor….the numbers are what they are….

  16. JaradSage

    The amount of Celtics fans in here crying about Bam answering a question 😂 y’all acting like he’s campaigning for DPOY when he was just answering the interviewer

  17. Agnk1765342

    The whole Heat team over the last couple years has been insufferably whiny.

  18. DeepJunglePowerWild

    It’s crazy to me that DPOY is the saltiest award by far. People (fans and players) get so upset about it.

  19. stache_twista

    I agree. So does Thibs. Joakim Noah for example … if you look at his basic STOCK stats they’re not that impressive, but he won DPOY and was an elite defender for years because he iced every pick and roll, could switch on to anybody and help contest any shot inside the 3 pt line (anchor the best defense in the league basically). This also applies to prime Kevin Garnett.

  20. Mygaffer

    I like how some idiots tried to make “stocks” happen and we put a stop to that shit.

  21. D4ddyREMIX

    He is putting in WORK on his DPOY campaign. He’s making sure he’s in the media discussions from the onset of this season.

  22. Justin_FieldsisElite

    Bam is the DPOY or Anthony Davis. It’s not gobert.

  23. CabbageStockExchange

    I’m just here to say I enjoyed AD/Bam locking things down during the Olympics

  24. LyonsKing12_

    Well, now it just becomes bad luck with Wemby being here now.

    Mobile at 7’4″ with long arms so he’s going to get so many blocks and affect so many shots, which means no one else is going to have a shot at DPOY as soon as this year.

    The media are tripping over themselves to start giving him DPOYs. Rightfully, so to an extent

    This sounds nice but it’s just wrong. The best defensive players in every sport warp the game before they even step on the court/field. People avoided throwing to whatever side of the field Deion Sanders was on (or Ed Reed, or Revis), they avoided getting Mutombo’d by taking horrible shots that had no chance of going in, and an entire nation rested their hopes on Gigi Buffon’s ability to make a 1 goal game a victory.
