The Boston Celtics are breaking the rules of NBA spending in an era in which every other team is getting cheaper. Why do they keep paying Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Derrick White and others when all these other teams can’t?

  1. Great video. I would argue that Phoenix, Milwaukee, New York, and Cleveland are all disregarding the second apron as well. Golden state was until they let Klay Thompson walk, and they're in much better shape moving forward.

  2. As long as you're winning….going into the 2nd apron isn't so bad. But if they get knocked out of the playoffs early, they now have major issues.

  3. I mean, they have been competitive for so long. I don’t think we can talk about ‘miscalculations’ anymore, especially after the last championship. Maybe they took a risk and won’t win another championship, but for the next five years, I see them in the conference finals, and that alone is more than what a lot of other teams have accomplished in their history.

  4. Celtics actually have the chance to 3 peat if they do things right. I definitely have them winning this year again and i don't see teams catching up that quickly. If we would rank the current NBA teams Boston would be S tier and then you run down the list. They literally looked like the best team in the league without Porzingis who would easily be an all star if he were on a different team. People talk about OKC, but unless Chet and JDub can make an all nba typa leap in the next 2 years, no team can match Boston in a 7 game series.

  5. Hopefully Houston navigates those choppy front office waters well and are able to pay everyone and let these young guys grow together!
I'm glad the way things have worked out for them so far cause I know many in their front office wanted to sign more vets and maybe trade for a superstar but things happened to not allow that and I think they are finally starting to see that they can grow internally and possibly be a contender before too long!

  6. The rules don’t apply to the Celtics BECAUSE OF the ownership change, not DESPITE it! In a couple of years, those contracts aren’t Wyc Grousbeck’s problem anymore!

  7. 5:30 – I get the salary cap etc., but what baffles me is "Minimum team salary". Really? Teams must OVERPAY to keep the league happy? Or sign some Anthony-Bennett-like players? Why? Why team can't have <126.5 mln payroll?

  8. I wouldn’t say that massive tax bill is getting away with it. Also, they drafted Jaylin and Jason and developed them. The CBA is what made them eligible for an extra hundred each. If you are eligible for extra money because of an award you achieved I don’t think that extra money should be Counted towards the teams payroll If the players are drafted and developed by the organization. Because now they are forced to get rid of one of the two players that they invested so heavily into.

  9. The Celtics are the best run organisation in the league Brad Steven’s has built this team insanely well. They have such a great chance of completing a 3peat

  10. Honestly if I’m the browns I’m cutting him June 1st taking all of that $172 million cap hit for the 2025 season and go full 1970s Buccaneers mode and just field rookies, practice quad tier guys, and mailmen off the street if they have to and just start fresh 2026z

  11. Why did they make all these rules with the salary cap when they can just set the cap at a certain number to build teams and adjust the cap as the league grows?

  12. It helps that the Celtics drafted their two stars, were able to add talent around them and then signed Tatum and Jalen to massive contracts by going over the cap thanks to the Bird exception.

  13. Stupid NBA players that play hard,
get the super max and screw their team and the contract becomes an albatross- is the reason why the NBA literally had to change the rules because the players are selfish.

Edit: Not the Celtics. They have good high character guys who are appropriately paid. It’s 80% of the other teams.

  14. Celtics are really the only team perfectly positioned to flip the bird to the 2nd apron. They already have their ring with a young enough core that you can ride that group for a number of years to try to win more. Yes you never know with injuries or players getting worst as they age but you gotta assume a glass half full approach and keep the good vibes going. Realistically, the Warriors did the same during their dynasty run by getting hit with the repeater tax over and over again. But it was price worth paying since the core group of guys (Steph/Dray/Klay/Iguodala/Livingston later KD) were a foundational group to keep together to keep trying to pump out as many titles as possible.

  15. They're not breaking the rules lol they're willing to pay the luxury tax to contend and win championships lol

  16. I honestly think the nba should have an incentive for teams that drafted their best players meaning higher tax exemption, compared to sign and trade stars. This is to encourage long term team building and development

  17. "You can get a free square, on opening night Gordon Hayward just has to finish 1 alley opp."

  18. That’s it with the Celtics they have a top 10-15 player in Tatum and a top 20-25 player in Jaylen Brown those guys are in the middle of their prime and they have a good player in White and Prozingas and Holidays are still good players as well.

With those players they can keep going especially with Brown and Tatum. Tatum is still just 26 and Jaylen Brown is about to be 28 in a few days so as long as those two are in their primes the Celtics can afford to go over apron

  19. Celtics just won the chip in dominant fashion missing KP for most of the playoffs. They are doing the right thing and committing long term to a team that has proven it can get things done.

  20. Celtics have the biggest chance to repeat this season but i don't see them on the same level past this year. OKC will catch up, Minnesota is just a piece away, Spurs are coming. In the east, Pacers, Cavs can still make some move to upgrade, Bucks probably fell a bit and Orlando. Orlando's roster construction match up well with boston and the way they built their team is very similar to boston's. 3 homegrown talent that they can pay above the salary cap. With cap construction to trade for one more superstar. I don't mention the knicks because they're very boom or bust.

  21. “They know they’re going to be good” yeah that’s gotta be the only reason 😂 what a wasted ten minutes

  22. Boston built 90% of their team before new regulation. Now they are maintaining the team and developing talent from inside. They are already good enough to be title contender for multiple years. The only downside is hard to elevate roster quickly by trading some bench players for a close to all-star player. After last championship, most will consider their strategy successful as a franchise.
