The defending NBA champion Detroit Pistons went 5-3 during the 1989-90 preseason, highlighted by a skirmish between James Edwards, Isiah Thomas, and Philadelphia 76ers center Mike Gminski. The brief altercation would serve as a sort of bookend to the regular season.
