I’m like 99% sure this isn’t a new trick at all. Am I going crazy?

How bad is league-wide hoops IQ when playing smart basketball a new trick?

I think the running of clock is a secondary benefit. Like, yeah, taking 10 seconds off is cool but not that big when there’s 5 minutes left…
The main benefit I see is forcing a defender to pick up the ball handler in the backcourt.

Belichick vibes.

I think the main benefit is to change the rhythm of the game. Momentum is huge in basketball, if a game is close near the end, the team that gets momentum can ride it to a win.

I’m not gonna lie this is one of those grifts that don’t really accomplish much besides be annoying to your opponent lmao. Only Smart and Grant could come up with some shit like this.

As everybody’s saying, it is not that new. I think we are using it more for all of the small readons said in this post: running the clock, forcing the defense come to you and break a little bit, keeping the momentum in hand. But all in all, all these small things are a tiny response to an early season weakness of us, considering how many leads we blew up real fast with losing the momentum and stagnation in the offense. That means the team is responding its weaknesses, just like adjustments on rebounding, and that is a good thing no matter how small those adjustments are.

This wasn’t Marcus freelancing, either, Al and Grant were set up in screening positions so that the Nuggets basically had to go to a full court press to contest it (either that or end up with one defender out of position when Marcus drives).
