Jayson Tatum has been playing at an MVP level a quarter into the NBA season. But some on ESPN still don’t want to call him a superstar. Despite having led the Boston Celtics to the NBA Finals in the 2022 playoffs & winning the Eastern Conference Finals MVP, it’s still not enough. The media would much rather anoint other players as superstars despite them not having achieved what Tatum has in his young career.

There's no way a guy who can tell us how to tie a tie is not a superstar.
Tatum is a superstar and Boston with Udoka out, they sitil playing grat. Its Giannis,Luka,Tatum…and Ja is not clouse to them.
Tatum is definitely a superstar but I am still not over the fact that Wiggins absolutely locked his a$$ in finals
Lebron
KD
Giannis
Kawhi
Curry
Luka
Lillard
Jokic
Embid
Tatum
These are basically untouchables And everyone else is a star or lower
W video from Tooforwon as always
With Tatum's resume already and his MVP calibre play this year, there is no feasible way you can say he isn't a superstar. NBA media continues to be the worst and RJ needs to be called out for his flip-flopping and stupid ass takes more often.
I like how Tatum basically described it perfectly at the end of the video himself. Like you said, people conflate Superstar with all time great.
ESPN logic be like
“Zion could be a superstar, but can he host SNL though?”
He isn't. He benefits greatly from his team. Can't be a superstar and lay eggs in the finals like that.
RJ type of mdfk that laughing during SNL (2022 type of SNL)
He’s the MVP man. I’m a Celtics fan but he’s putting up offensive number luka/Steph etc are whilst playing D and is the best player on the best team.
to be REAL Super Star need to have ring as Batman and or/and MVP, so DEFINITELY he is NOT
People use the word superstar now days to everyone who is star.
WHAT DID RICH MEAN WHEN HE SAID “JOKIC IS NOT A SUPERSTAR OFF THE COURT???????” WHAT???
Superstars transcend basketball. Tatum doesn’t yet
He’s not a superstar, coming from a celtics fan, he travels too much and is a finals choker
Personally I think superstar is less about your play on the court and also factors in your image and that "x" factor. I feel like I should rephrase that, it's not strictly about your play on the court but of course it's a factor. I don't think Jayson Tatum is a superstar but it's not because of his play, which is phenomenal, it's about the Celtics as a whole being such a cohesive unit and Jaylen Brown being looked at as a 1b to Tatum's 1a. I think someone like Luka is looked at as a superstar because of the load he carries on the team (and him being a handsome white boy that the NBA pushes doesn't hurt either).
It's like if you're talking about actors and trying to compare Brad Pitt to Paul Giamatti (just picking 2 random actors). Both are great, Paul is arguably a better actor, but Brad Pitt is the A list box office draw, he's the superstar.
This one's a banger dude. Love it
The media picks who they want to be the faces of the league. Some consultant with a criteria running numbers determines who the media runs with. It's not about the body of work
Isn't Tatum still 19 tho.
Tatum was a star from his first day in the league. He BEEN nice.
I guess if the criteria is being a household name, perhaps not. But if it's just being one of the top 5 basketball players in the world currently playing, he certainly qualifies
Since we’re all giving our Superstar criteria… The 10 starting players in the All-Star game are Superstars.
To me what separates a star from a superstar is just popularity/recognition
Tooforwon. You’re my boi and all but I can’t let you get away with calling Ja overrated. 😂
They can say he's not a superstar and I don't care as long as he keeps averaging 30ppg on like 20 shots and great efficiency and lock down defense.
Ive been following the Cs for almost 20 years. It’s because JT is in Boston. Silver doesn’t want JT to set roots in Boston and play there for 10 more years.
Stop listening to Dick Jefferson 😭😭😭
Ok ok. People have a hard time hearing her. She made a solid line to be a TRUE superstar. And I agree with her line!
Her main criteria was GET THERE. Get to a final (conference included), win a final. Kyrie BARELY gets a pass as a superstar for that goddamn shot. Her six is probs spot on!
Steph, Lebron, Kawhi, Giannis, KD, and Kyrie.
Luka and Tatum are next up
Brad Beal and Lillard are big deals but have never gotten THERE, it’s why they’re not superstars.
Tell me a more solid six for TRUE superstars. Like NBA players think these people are superstars as well….
Sometimes I want to believe that these ESPN personalities are on crack.
damn…. tatum became underated cause his meltdown… Lebron had a meltdown the same way in 2011… then became a new king and won his 1st ring.
TFW: "They're still telling you Jayson Tatum is not a superstar."
Within the first minute of the video, from the loudest mouth in sports entertainment:
Stephen A: "Jayson Tatum is a superstar."
Brilliant.
I don’t think luka better than him
Tatum is a 2Way superstar get it right 😅
… another Dubs fan:
Can't stand the Bocelts! Appreciate and admire this group very much. Deeply talented… Tatum in the star of the show… both ends.
Yeah I never understood how luka is a superstar and Tatum has had way more success
He’s been a superstar for two years now whoever doesn’t think so is blind especially this year it’s undeniable
😂😂😂 that’s because they haters
He's the only person on their list that plays defense. Crazy how defense a part of basketball isn't accounted in superstar conversations
If the mavericks stay at 500 for the season you can forget about Luca winning mvp…

To say that Ja is a superstar and Tatum isn’t, is CRAZY!! What are they smoking?!!!
I do not understand the media, how in the hell is somebody able to put up 31 points 7 rebounds and five assist yet not be considered as superstar oh well, I guess their ignorance is bliss but goddamn this is just pure disrespect
another brilliant piece of work. This is brilliant 👌
"there are 6 superstars"
