Virginia Tech defeated No. 18 North Carolina 80-72 at Cassell Coliseum in the first conference matchup of the season for each team. The Hokies led by as much as 18 in the second half, but the Tar Heels clawed back to cut the deficit to as little as 3 late. The comeback effort fell short, though, as the Hokies earned a statement win in what was otherwise a dominant performance. Justyn Mutts was absolutely scorching in the matchup, putting up 27 points on 12-16 shooting (with 21 of them coming in the second half). He also pulled down 11 rebounds and dished out 4 assists. Sean Pedulla, Hunter Cattoor, and Grant Basile also had big contributions, scoring 14, 13, and 12 points respectively. For the Tar Heels, Caleb Love, RJ Davis, and Pete Nance had 18 points apiece.
