The reasoning never made much sense, and only got worse when it came out that the Clippers didn’t even propose the trade: The Lakers, then led by Johnson (and his eventual and freshly extended through 2026 successor, Rob Pelinka) simply offered the move and the Clippers “gladly accepted,” leading to much laughter from Lakers legend and Clippers consultant Jerry West at his old team’s expense.
To close out the latest episode of his eponymous “The Lowe Post” podcast, Zach Lowe of ESPN revealed that the league at large is still getting a chuckle out of that move after Zubac’s recent 30-point, 29-rebound demolition of hoped-for Lakers savior Myles Turner:
“He put up that 30-30, or 30-29 game, whatever it was, against the Pacers and Myles Turner, purported Lakers trade target Myles Turner, and I got probably no less than eight text messages from executives around the league telling me ‘oh the irony of Ivica Zubac, whom the Lakers gave up for Mike Muscala, blowing up Myles Turner, the guy who is going to help save the Lakers’ season all these years later.’”

The Lakers were trying to clear cap space for a shot at kawhi, they ended up winning a title. They were trying to find a shooting big that would synergize with Bron who ended up getting hurt and not playing the rest of the year. The fact that haterz continue to push this talking point tells you all you need to know.
The Lakers probably could have gotten more than a half eaten chalupa and a bag of chips for Zu tbh
Not that i agree with it but to justify a little bit of magic’s decision making…..I believe Zubac was also up for a contract extension that summer as well. We were looking to cut costs to bring in veteran help for LeBron and soon after AD. We didn’t even bring Randle back. Thats how much we were penny pinching. We were dead set in bringing in a third star.
You’re laughing? The Lakers won a championship and you’re LAUGHING?
Yes it was a fuck up. But are these the same organizations that have existed for 60 years with zero success?
Beyond horrible deal. Lakers had his bird rights to exceed the cap without a single problem.
Magic Johnson thought Moose could bring shooting to make a playoff push. Is it at bad a Westbrook? Of course not but that deal doesn’t get enough hate.
Were they laughing when the Lakers won the championship?
are the Lakers the first team to trade an average roleplayer for nothing? who cares we won a championship

Westbrick trade was way worse
Zu was also traded at the height of the small ball movement. No team was using a traditional center that couldn’t guard the perimeter
Sure Lakers got pretty much nothing from the trade…but people acting like he’s a generational talent. Win some you loose some. Lakers scouting department finds player like that every year.
The horror, we traded away a player who became a solid center.
We got it. We know it was a horrible trade… several years ago. Shouldn’t we be moving on by now? I mean, he’s just a role player.
While it’s such a dumb fucking trade, at least we won a championship. It may have been the worst way to make space but oh well.
LOL WE LAUGHING AT MOSTLY EVERY TIME WHO NEVER WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS HAHAHA
Appropriate, since I’m still crying. What a shit show the “Magic Hour” was!
You would think Zubac is a damn superstar the way people talk about us trading him
Remind what Zu has won?
I’m so tired of hearing about this damn trade. Since that trade we won a championship, without him. Yes, that’s all that matters. Has he lead the clippers to a title?
Won a chip shortly after, I’ll take it.
