  1. Every Serbian family have their own patron saint which is transmitted to next generation. The Slava is the annual ceremony of the family patron saint. Friends and family come for food, drink, food, music drink, drink and more food. Some can last a whole weekend and is celebrated as much if not more than Christmas. The slava is to celebrate the family's first ancestor who was baptized into Christianity, represented by a saint. There are about 80 different family patron saints and Sveti (saint) Nikola is the about half the families in Serbia.
So at Christmas time in a 4 week period from mid Dec to mid Jan you often have St. Nikola being celebrated AND families celebrating it as their slava, then Materice (mother's day), Detinjci (children's day), Oci (Fathers day), Calendar new year (Jan 1), then you go to church on Christmas Eve and big Christmas day meal on Jan 6 & 7 and finally Old Calendar New Year celebrations/food/music/drink on Jan 13.
It takes conditioning and practice and elastic pants since childhood to be able to go thru this all.

  2. I expected him to have some reaction to the slava question, but he instantly went to his explanation, that was kinda interesting. Also, to add to his answer, slava has religious connotations as well, it's more than just a multiple course meal, there are other church related traditions and activities when it comes to celebrating a slava. But I think he still gave a pretty good answer.

Saint Nikola coming up on 19th December. It's the most celebrated slava in Serbia, right around the DNVR's newly introduced slava for Saint Joker's day. Cool coincidence 🙂

  3. its commonly translated as Patron Saint Day, it makes more sense, than just saying Slava, and Nikola shares the name with his patron Saint
