Do Klay and Dray need to be held more accountable?

Whilst there were some legitimate frustrations with the loss against the knicks towards the younger players I gotta ask how much of the blame should be laid upon our vets especially the two that make up of the og 3 core historically they have not performed well without curry.

Klay is 41-61 without Steph for his career, [41-61 without Steph for his career](https://www.statmuse.com/nba/ask/klay-record-without-steph) and [19.5 PPG on 54.1% TS](https://www.statmuse.com/nba/ask/klay-ts-without-steph)

In those games this comes at a win rate of 40% which you may not think is bad but a lot of those matches were with KD as the main option. If you take out the games with KD and Klay being the first option his record comes at: [19-46, 18PPG on 53.3 TS without Steph and KD](https://www.statmuse.com/nba/ask/klay-record-without-steph-and-without-kevin-durant) and win rate of 29%.

[Against the Knicks Klay got 11 PTS, 5\/12 FG, 4 REB, 2 AST, 5 TO and -27 \(+\/-\)](https://preview.redd.it/3r1uqg7ev97a1.jpg?width=1024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2f032f84f135587d059f5ec6fce068f4d9d05532)

Klay had another poor game where he was shooting too much from off the dribble, was very careless in possession, took bad shots and was sloppy on defence which have been common themes throughout the season with Steph out you would think he would be the no.1 scoring option but he’s been anything but with Poole stepping up. There’s no way a player who’s getting paid $40m this season should be getting the same amount of points as Moody.

Draymond Green is [34-63, 8.3 PPG, 6.6 REBS and -303 (+/-)](https://www.statmuse.com/nba/ask/draymond-record-without-steph) which is about a win rate of 35% now his averages [are not that different playing with Steph](https://www.statmuse.com/nba/ask/draymond-record-with-steph) this is a bad thing since with Steph out you lose 30 points and 6 to 7 rebounds & assists in game you’re gonna need your other vets to make up for it.

[Against the Knicks Dray got 7 PTS, 3\/5, 5 REB, 6 AST, 1 TO and was -14\(-\/+\)](https://preview.redd.it/go8ttbui6a7a1.jpg?width=1024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3ad61def71b8f787454136c1634d10d03a1e95b3)

Kerr once said Draymond is the worst player in meaningless games and it really shows when we play without Steph and games go bad Draymond looks and acts checked out, with Steph out you would think he would try to score and rebound more but he just doesn’t do it. As evident in the 2nd half against the Knicks when the game started getting tough.

Only Wiseman, Lamb and Looney took less shots than Green. In his first 6 seasons Draymond got 95 double doubles in his last 6 Draymond has only gotten 39, if the warriors are to survive they need Green to pick up points and rebounding which is down this year to make up for Steoh’s absence.

Some people have argued that Klay and Dray have been riding Steph’s coattails and they have a point since in the finals after Steph they weren’t the best players, Wiggins and Looney were a lot more instrumental than the pair of them. But what we can all agree is those two need to step up up, learn to adapt without Steph and provide much needed leadership, the big test will be the home stand with Wiggins and DDV coming back if they don’t perform well we will win less games.

I think it really is time so sit Klay for one or two games, he is straight up a negative influence on the game rn. Taking shots he shouldnt take, being careless with possessions, not giving a fck about defense. He should not come back until he learns to take smarter shots and improves his body language and defense. Dray on the other hand seemed fine, i think we just have a lack of really good options for him.

Steph Curry is, has been, and will continue to be, the straw that stairs the drink. Without Steph, there is no blend to the offense.

  3. It doesn’t matter what we think. Kerr has basically said that he won’t do this becasue these guys have won 4 titles and he doesn’t want to change what has worked.

Nope. Best starting 5 when playing together. They’ve been built to play together. We don’t have to role players to step in and keep the rhythm going. The 2nd unit just doesn’t fit with the 1st. It’s not our year and that’s OK. Our championship dynasty run isn’t over though. We will get more rings. Just not this season, unless we make some moves. We need 2 good role players to be back in contention. A good C and a good wing is all we need.

  5. Yea imo this has been the biggest issue with this team (even more than wise albeit I’d be lying if that didn’t need to be addressed)

steph is the warriors. yes, steph, klay, and draymond are the core 3 that have been there for over a decade. but without steph, this team doesn’t work. it shows when he’s out, because this team cannot succeed without him unfortunately. when the other 2 are out, it still works because of steph. i don’t know what’s going to happen post steph

  7. I wouldn’t put it that way. They’ve always been supporting players. They tailored their games to fit with Steph, and each other. Draymond probably wouldn’t become a 10 assist threat elsewhere. Klay probably wouldn’t play great defense on quick point guards, like he used to.

The Knicks are a hot team. 7 game winning streak heading into last night, now 8. And we weren’t just missing Steph, it was half the rotation. Curry, Wiggins, DiVincenzo, JaMychal.

Yes, the team needed better performance from those two last night (and with Klay, this whole season), but as they age, you kinda have to expect that their performance would decline. That being said, they’re still both productive, positive players. The issue is not having a roster around them that can insulate their weaknesses and deficiencies as they age. Keep in mind – they just won the championship 6 months ago. There’s no margin for error when you have sophomores and rookies playing alongside them.

they are past their primes and getting old. It’s not gonna get easier.

Klay is making ~50 million a year and he shows zero leadership or accountability. He doesn’t pass to make teammates better, he takes bad quality shots, he sulks when he doesn’t get the ball. At least Draymond attempts to be a leader and tries to get everyone fired up with emotion and hustle. Klay just plays basketball, chucks up shots, and calls it a day.

  11. ambiguouslarge

Klay definitely does. His shot selection has regressed. When he makes tough shots it’s fools gold because he’s going to keep chucking next game when he isn’t hitting them.

Sure they need to be held accountable but fans should also be also realistic. These guys aren’t working with a full tank anymore. Attrition has taken over and we are seeing them at on the back end of their primes and due to Klay’s tough circumstances he may be past his prime all together. Klay and Dray can still can have good games but some days they don’t have their legs under them.

The elephant in the room is that they are at the point of their career where they need to take pay cuts to stay. Dray thinks he will get more money on the market even though he is slowly diminishing every year and Klay actually may be willing to do so but his production and contract are so far apart that its killing the team. Combined they should only be worth about 35-40M but they have salaries combined that is nearly double that amount….so that along with the youth movement is killing the team.

  13. rarestakesando

Dude Draymond gone Draymond he has been having a great season honestly and has been looking for his shot more than ever with success.

Klay on the other hand man 5 TO is unacceptable add that too chucking at momentum killing moments that is impossible to see in the stat line and a less than 50% on FGs. He needs to be benched when messes up. Short leash him like Moody. No excuses for this low effort low IQ play. Smh
