Dear NBA, This Needs To STOP…

Watch the clock as this shot goes in at 9:06 remaining, and notice how Ja Morant literally stole 16 seconds from Minnesota’s time for a comeback by acting like a guy who’s never played sports before in his life.
Thing is, he did it throughout the entire 4th quarter and when you add up all of these sequences, it’s almost an entire minute that he shaved off without having to defend the lead.
And this is not even his worst offense. In a wild display of this technique, after this shot by Kyrie Irving, Morant stole an entire shot clock, a whole possession away from the Nets. He is the absolute god at this and it’s not even close.
I mean Just look at him slowly walking in a squat position and staring at Ben Simmons as he milks every possible second that he could at the end of this game.
Actually a lot of players are doing this. Let me show you. What up everybody, my name is stefan and this is Heat Check. Let’s get into it.
Dennis Schroeder is just as sneaky, and against Washington in a very close game, he also wasted almost an entire 24 seconds before the Wizards realized that the clock is their enemy and they can’t afford this to happen. Finally Porzingis put an end to this circus, otherwise Schroeder was ready to finish the game off like this.
And after this bucket by Detroit, the Celtics shamelessly stood in the backcourt for like 10 seconds, waiting for their opponents. And it turned out to be a genius decision, as they got an advantage, and a wide open Tatum in the corner splashing the three.
And before you ask, this is not an 8 second violation because that’s being counted off of the shot clock and not the game clock.
As you watch Nikola Jokic also exploiting this loophole throughout the entire 4th quarter let me quickly explain that for the first 3 quarters the game clock doesn’t stop after a made basket until the last minute. And for the 4th quarter it’s the last 2 minutes of the period.
And of course the shot clock will not start until a player touches it and establishes possession, so that’s how you get an opportunity for situations like this.
This is nothing new, and it has been happening in the NBA in the past, and this moment of Ty Lawson milking the clock is one of the most famous examples of it.
And even tho it’s technically pretty smart for the offense to do it, and it’s the other team’s fault for not pressing and allowing the clock to run, I don’t really like to see it in NBA games.
In a weird way it reminds me of football players just laying on the pitch faking an injury so that the time would pass. And to me this is against the spirit of the sport.
But I don’t really see a way to change this unless the NBA decides to stop the clock after a made basket from the beginning of the 4th quarter.
That way players would just be focused on playing basketball instead of running down the time.
Is this smart, or a bit unprofessional? Let me know in the comments. If you liked this video, support the grind and subscribe. Talk to you in the next one. Peace out.

  1. The clock should be stopped after every field goal, doesn't matter if it's a blow out or a close game.

  2. I'm a Nikola Jokic fan in I actually hate this tactic I do wish the nba would stop the clock in the 4th another thing as a Jokic fan in the first 3 quarters he literally does everything he can to get the ball out quickly and sometimes does full court passes for easy layups but in the 4th he's milking the clock until the 2 minute mark when the clock finally stops after made basket.

  3. After a basket the players should have those 24 seconds not starting the clock from the first possession. Is that simple to fix.

  4. What needs to be added to the rulebook is that when the game clock is running on the inbound (after a basket) – the shot clock starts the moment the ball leaves the hands of the player passing the ball from out of bounds.
Refs can roughly do the count for the five seconds to inbound the ball just as for any other situation.
Stalling with taking the ball in your hands to do the inbound pass and/or positioning to do the inbound should be sanctioned with a warning to the coach/team captain at first instance, and then if it persists – with a team technical.
If the scoring team intentionally interferes in a way to cause the receiving team to not be able to get the ball after the basket or whatever like that – instant technical.

If the ball objectively gets shoved away by accident or is stuck somewhere or whatever else that's out of the power of players – and that causes unnecessary stalling of the game – stop the God damn game clock.

    There, I've fixed it. 😜

(some of these things the refs can even actually implement in Europe/by FIBA rules – e.g. 2:13 situation no way the ref wouldn't have stopped the clock if it was Euroleague or even domestic league here in Serbia – under the assumption they're doing their job properly and not screwing up ofc)

  5. For me its a part of the mind game, NBA is not just a basic basketball game, teams also use strategies. For my own opinion 😄

  6. I don't think this needs to stop. If you don't want the other team to just run out the clock, go play some damn defense.

  7. defense is lazy. Defense needs to be all up in there to steal the ball or force a pick up, not let them walk it up casually.

  8. I would not compare it to footballers faking an ijury but with footballers passing ball between ther center backs for 1 Minute, not trying to attack the goal but just to waste time. In both cases its the defending fault, not pressuring more.
But to my opninion. Either the NBA just wants hightlight clips so they should not allow this behavior, or they should start calling all theese ridicolus travels everyone is making and we get back to "real" basketball. I would prefer the 2nd choice.

    Merry Christmas to everyone! 🙂

  9. Apparently you’ve never watch the Celtics game Marcus Smart does this all the time. Remember in high school back in the 90s we were doing this.

  10. What the NBA can do is create a delay of game violation for extended periods of clock draining without actually making progress dribbling or passing the ball

  11. All sports need new rules for rules will be outdated or worked around. I think 4th quarter should extend to atleast 6 or 8 minutes left in the game. It’s healthy to modernize and keep the game as “a game”

  12. This is Ja Morant's specialty move!!!! Other players are copying his move!!! So disrespectful!!!

  13. Faking injuries seems worse in that case you’re milking the concern of others for an advantage 100% unsportsmanlike

  14. It’s almost like the defense should be prepared for situations like this😮

  15. The rule change can be that as soon as the ball hits the floor, regardless of whether the player receiving the ball picks it up or let’s it roll on the floor, the shot clock starts regardless. It makes no sense to have the game clock running but not the shot clock. That’s f bs.

  16. For the throw-in, I think the referee should start counting for the five second throw-in as soon as the ball is made available to them (right in front of them where they are able to reach out and grab it).

  17. I actually think that this is smart and part of the tactics, let me explain. You showed the play when Boston exploited the run for the ball, and when another team reach your team explodes and your PG have an advantage already and someone else need to come out to cover so why not use it when it's in the rulebook. I disagree with you and I believe that this rule needs to stay and if they introduce stopping the clock the games would be much longer, similarly like its in the Europe. You know sometimes when in Europe the last quarter is an hour long. The games are already long, this would be unnecessary move especially because its used as part of the tactics but in the way to cross the defender and have 5 on 4 from the get go. I understand why you don't like it but I'm viewing this completely differently and not to mention that the teams who are using this are the teams with the nice lead so in my eyes they deserved it.

  18. Either the clock should stop after every made basket, or the 5-second rule should be counted until the fiest touch on court happens.
