DOMANTAS SABONIS MEDICAL UPDATE: Kings’ Center Has ‘Skiers Thumb’ Injury

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – A day after Christmas, the Sacramento Kings announced that center Domantas Sabonis sustained an avulsion fracture of the ulnar collateral ligament of the right thumb during Friday’s game versus the Wizards. 🎙
The injury was confirmed through extensive consultation with Kings’ team physicians and outside specialists. Sabonis will be listed as questionable for Tuesday’s game against Denver, the Kings’ communications shop released to the media in a written statement about 3:30 p.m., on Monday, Dec. 26. 🎙
According to VERY WELL HEALTH, “fractures of the proximal phalanx Ulnar Collateral Ligament (UCL) Injury/Avulsion (a.k.a. Skier’s thumb) usually result from hyperabduction of the thumb. Examination shows bruising and swelling to the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint, with focal tenderness to the ulnar aspect of the joint and pain there with a pinch grip.”
An ulnar collateral ligament injury most often occurs as a result of sports injuries. Athletes who are skiers and soccer players often sustain this injury. Also called a “skier’s thumb,” It is “one of the important ligaments at the base of the thumb joint,” VERY WELL HEALTH stated in the June 27, 2022, article. 🎙
In addition, the medical article explains that the UCL is “a band of tough, fibrous tissue that connects the bones at the base of the thumb. The ligament prevents the thumb from bending too far away from the hand.” 🎙
The Kings take on the Denver Nuggets on Dec. 27 and Dec. 28 at Golden 1 Center.🎙
