Bill Russell: “It might seem strange but I did not know our Celtic teams won eight championships in a row until I read about it in a game program. Our focus was always on that particular season, always one year at a time. The year we played had nothing to do with the previous year or the next year.”

This is the biggest inconsequential lie I’ve ever seen

He didn’t even know they were in the playoffs till they handed him the trophy. Actually he never even knew the score in the games. They took it one possession at a time.

  3. He was not playing in a era with a constant stream of news and bullshit being beamed into a smartphone 24/7. This is definitely possible

  4. ThunderClown101

Michael Jordan didn’t even know the Bulls won 6 rings until he saw the Last Dance documentary on Netflix.

  5. dont-YOLO-ragequit

Imagine winning until it becomes Groundhog day.

Not sure I believe this but badass quote nonetheless

Im guessing he means he lost track of how many it was, not that he forgot he was winning rings.

This reads as if he means that the mentality was still “Champion Seeking” team vs reigning dynasty. That’s an interesting conversation to have with the Warriors and how they’ve been performing this year

  13. He is 100% messing with the interviewer. By all accounts, he is one of the sharpest guys to have ever played basketball.

But he won 13 championships in 15 years, starting with the 1955 NCAA tournament. One of the two seasons he didn’t win, he was injured. He won a gold medal during that span, too. If anyone in history were to lose count, it would have been him.

Bill Russell always liked talking about how great he was.
