I asked Fred VanVleet about his shot selection, and finding the balance on a team that isn’t a good shooting team. Here’s what he said.

  1. “I don’t care about the numbers I just play to win”- a guy who has publicly complained about having a lesser role several times this season

Sounds like when Rudy banned stat sheets from the locker room

A lot of his answer makes sense tbh, but the part about it being because he’s the 2nd or 3rd option rather than 1st is so out of touch when the guy is missing a lot of open 3s in critical moments all season.

“When I’m aggressive, I play well”

This is true for maybe 10% of games this year. The other 90% have been games where we could’ve won if he wasn’t so damn aggressive all the time and looked to get teammates involved instead.

This is such a asinine thing to say publicly lmao brother self awareness aint high

“I don’t care about the numbers as you can tell”

    We can tell alright

I love Freddy but he has some factors going against him. He’s slow, he’s short, he has no hops, he’s a sidespin shooter. When his shot is not falling he needs to get his teammates involved and hunt mismatches, pass to open guys and lead players into their shots.

Lowry always had that little pick-and-pop with Serge and just knew when to feed certain guys at certain times. Fred? Nah. On the last shot of the game, he had OG(I think) in the corner wide open! Bro, pass!

A situational role lol he’s top ten in handling the ball this year…he’s actually Rudy gay

I don’t think he’s watching enough tape if he thinks he should be shooting as much as he has thus far. The quality of his shots this season do not look good. Missing open looks is one thing, but his bad decision making needs to be reigned in.

“Trying to squeeze as much life out of this team as possible” “I haven’t been able to find my touch in a secondary, or third role”- who does this guy think he is? I’m genuinely concerned for this team if this is their franchise PG. Zero self awareness, huge ego.

He literally has the second worse FG in the entire league, has terrible shot selection and does not do a good job running the offence or doing anything useful to help the half court issues, often ruins the pace of the game, but thinks he is no1 option worthy? Guys don’t even guard him like that. Is that what he think championship calibre basketball is?

Also, was he and the team not more efficient when he was off-ball in the beginning of the season? Nurse or the FO need to bring him down to earth.

They’re getting Fred outta here man. Others in this thread have pointed out the parallels with Rudy Gay and it feels too glaring to ignore.

lmao what other role should he play? first option, second? feel like he is the second option rn lmao

  13. That’s cringe. How was this dude mentored by Kyle?

You need to be the primary option to play well?

    > The thought was to try to come back and play more winning, championship-calibre basketball. I haven’t been able to find my touch in a secondary, third role. As much. When I’m aggressive, I play well. I’m trying to find ways to compete and bring value to the team.

Could’ve fooled me. What is this nonsense about acting like he’s stepped aside to try and let the team win? He’s been told to play a different role, doesn’t listen, then complains about his new role that he has yet to fully commit to.

Trade this arrogance before he spreads this entitlement in the lockeroom.
