The Definitive Deep Dive into whether or not the Toronto Raptors should trade Fred VanVleet

In Episode 1315, Sean Woodley is joined by Joe Wolfond (Pound the Rock, The Score) to fully examine the question of whether or not the Toronto Raptors should trade point guard Fred VanVleet before the 2023 NBA Trade Deadline. Off the top, Sean and Joe run through some of the reasons for ang against the Raptors dealing the 2019 NBA champion, and try to parse whether the season-long slump VanVleet has found himself in on both ends of the ball is the sign of trouble to come for the team that pays his next contract, or merely a poorly-timed slump that is not representative of what is to come for VanVleet in the future. Next, they talk about whether there’s any juice to the idea of the Raptors standing pat with VanVleet and Gary Trent Jr., the thinking being that upgrades to the back end of the roster might be what’s more needed this summer as opposed shipping players with skills the Raptors already have in short supply out the door. Plus, what could the Raptors realistically even hope to receive in exchange for VanVleet? Is the market for him strong enough for the Raptors to bring back enough to justify moving on from the seven-year Raptor? Lastly, Sean pitches a few trade proposals to Joe for judgement. Could the Clippers make a consolidation trade to add yet another member of the 2019 champs to their mix? Could VanVleet and Trent be the return for the Russell Westbrook + two first-round picks package that has been dangled in rumours all season long? What about the Minnesota Timberwolves or the Miami Heat as a landing spot? Or could VanVleet be the co-star to Luka Doncic with the Dallas Mavericks? It’s a long show, and a complex situation for Masai Ujiri and Bobby Webster to navigate. Enjoy!

  1. Sean I just gotta say bro I love your energy and all over the place podcasting it’s awesome your doing great your my favourite raptors media

  2. Fred Vanvleet trade to Brooklyn for Seth Curry & another piece.

Seth Curry has an expiring contract, see what you got with him on the roster adding another elite shooter, spot up & as movement shooter. A player who has more to his game offensively then people think
A player whose has one of the best value contracts in NBA & been consistent with his FG% & 3 point %.

He's a better shooter then Fred.

Seth Curry can get you 13 PPG-15 PPG on high efficiency from both field & from 3.

His game he doesn't need to dribble much, doesn't need m the ball much and is happy to play within his role both as a starter or off the bench.

You sacrifice defense for offense but Raptors defense has been awful, can't get worse then it is.

Raptors landing Scoot Henderson is best case scenario.

You add a special scoring talent, special playmaking talent, franchise guard.

Raptors having Scoot Henderson, Seth Curry, OG, Scottie, Siakam.

Otto, Thad, Boucher, Precious, Koloko off the bench.

It's an upgrade in playmaking, scoring threat, a legit rim threat from guard position.

Gives Siakam & Barnes legitimate spacing.

  3. Sean, raps bench has not been developed to the extent they are half decent contributors. Some of our previous bench pieces were so under estimated and not utilized by the coaching team. Ie yuta, brissett

  4. Great episode. I don't think they should trade neither Fred nor Gary. Otto was supposed to give us depth but he's only played 8 games this season. Precious being out for so long also hurt us big time because we have had no help from the bench this season. Although tough, I'd say stick to your original plan with a delayed take off and add bench power for next year. My two cents.

  5. i like Fred. He's got the biggest heart and is a leader. Not sure he's a great leader as a short SG playing the PG. If Fred was 6'6 he would top 20 player all time and you can take that to the bank. If he's 6'6 and athletic than possibly top 10 all time. But we definitely need to trade VV provided it's fair value. VV for Jalen Williams from OKC and a future first. This year proves VV cannot play off ball, he tried and now he is out of rythm and cannot find his shot back. With this team i don't think you need another ball dominant player. You need a rim protector for sure and another shot creator. GTj fits us because he's an efficient gunner.

  6. if we get rid of VV for Jalen Williams and picks, we can sign Jakob in the summer with VV money.
