Tim Connelly was hired away from the Denver Nuggets to the Minnesota Timberwolves this past offseason, and immediately made the Rudy Gobert trade. That trade is already one of the worst in NBA history, ruining a very promising young team.

The trade that gets worse and worse the longer you look at it. I've been looking at it basically this whole time since it's happened
Tim Connelly maybe the best person in the league to have on draft night, the worst person everywhere else. He was getting fleeced with trades and should have Sold High on Will Barton.
Yes, the price was too much. But is anyone really convinced the Timberwolves were on the right path to become a contender in the next 2-5 years? Shave off the last couple picks in the deal and I don't really see the problem with trusting your numbers and taking a swing when the opportunity presents itself.
Reason why Denver got Michael porter jr is because doc river was hard headed. Ballmer wanted MPJ, but doc protested by saying he would step down if clippers picked MPJ
Connelly somehow traded Gobert twice and ended up on the short end of the deal BOTH times š
It makes no sense, 4 1st round picks and 1 picks swap?! Bruh you could've had damn near any player you wanted š¤¦š½āāļøš¤¦š½āāļøš¤¦š½āāļø
Like Chris Broussard always say. He's not the player is the system and the coaching don't bring the player here with the system
Tbh though, we don't know if the owners put pressure on him to make that move, if that's the case, he was just doing his job.
I still can't understand how he thought Rudy Gobert would make them real contenders. Did he not watch Rudy play in Utah before the trade?
I might be wrong on this but, given the massive difference in Connelyās GM behavior recently I wonder if the Gobert trade was just something Minnesota already had their minds set on. I wouldnāt be shocked if he had to commit to it
Thats what they get trying to copy the nuggets in allmost everything, going even this far to offer TC ownership stakes lmao ….what they dont understand about the nuggets is that nikola jokic masks all the flaws of people in the organization , from front office to coaching. Cant copy jokic.
As a wolves fan I despise Tim Connelly with a damn passion, he ruined a roster that was the most fun Iāve had watching basketball over the last 10 years. We really sold our soul for Rudy gobert smh
BRO I AINT NO GM BUT ANYONE WHO KNOW BASKETBAL THAT TRADE MADE THEM WORSE LAST YEAR THEY WERE BETTER
I don't know how he figured that this trade would be good for the team. They needed a true power forward. It would be better training for a guy like Jonathan Isaac Julius Randle Tobias Harris Jae Crowder anything would of been better then getting Rudy. Rudy would have been a good pickup for somebody like the Charlotte
This might end up being the worst trade in NBA history
He broke The Number 1 Rule. Never Trade with Danny Ainge unless if you're Boston or Cleveland
I think the more obvious reason is that he took over two different franchises at two different points. The Nuggets were rebuilding when he took over and the Wolves already had their two stars in Ant and Kat. He was looking for a 3rd star with the Wolves like he did in Denver with AG trade. Now the Nuggets dont have a 1st round draft pick they can trade until 2029.
WTF are you talking about??
Min is not Den. There is no comparison on situation. Min have all the tools to have a contender ceiling. Rudy trade is a risk to reach that ceiling. Without Rudy they are 2-d round team at best. They have 5 years to catch the bird like Toronto does. They need to start deep PO runs THIS YEAR to have a chance in 2025.. cause it takes experience of the stars to do something
I donāt blame him being aggressive. He just went for the wrong guy š¤¦āāļø. If youāre going to trade that much, go for a top 10 scorer
This is 100% an ownership problem. Tim Connelly never skipped a step in Denver. The new owners in Minny are so desperate to be a relevant franchise..
Guys could have traded for Donovan Mitchell. Just imagine how Timberwolves would be now it that happened instead.
The main thing I got from this video is that Tim Connelly is a double agent for the Utah Jazz.
Rough take Tucker, they need more time. Itās been 40 games. Bron, Wade and Bosh sucked for their first 30 and their level of play is so much higher
If only Phil Jackson drafted jokic before drafting ClayAnthony early.
Something worth mentioning is the Nuggets new GM Calvin Booth, who was working under Connelly during his tenure. Calvin Booth absolutely made some great moves this season bringing in KCP, Brown and drafting Braun.
Stupid hiring
I feel like this is one of those scenarios where NBA fans need to choose. Either stop complaining about taking(which i think the league cares more about than the fans) or stop acting like hindsight was available before the trade. I give them props for going for it, it didn't workout but they tried.
To be clear, this is nothing against the video, great work as always.
Tim was a great GM for us.Denver owes him so much for building our culture and leaving us with great players. But his strength was the draft and him trading those picks away takes away from his strength
In all honesty Tim Connelly did rather shit job in Denver. Keeping Burton, forcing PJ Dozier, giving tons of money to washup Millsap, not bringing any quality 3-D player, bringing Facundo when Denver had so many PG's. Giving max contract to MPJ, taking a lot of young people, investing in them and then giving them to other teams. Bad draft swaps. Not bringing quality people. I mean the list is long. Only thing that he had going on to himself is being ultra nice person. So I am not surprised he did this bad job with Wolfs
Naw that other guy years ago that passes up on Steph , curry and d r and them and took johnny flinn and Rubio
Connelly made a ton of mistakes in Denver. Yes, he drafted Jokic. And that alone is an amazing accomplishment. But he also overpaid SO many players on the roster while he was there. The worst offense was basically giving MPJ a max off of just two months of great play. Now that's looking like one of the scariest contracts in the entire NBA. The Nuggets books are an absolute mess in general. They're ridiculously expensive and it's only going to get worse down the road.
I'm not saying Connelly was bad for Denver. But I just don't get how he got this reputation as an amazing GM. Their new GM has done more good moves in one offseason than Connelly did in multiple combined. The KCP and Bruce Brown moves are exactly the type of moves a team with Jokic should be doing — productive players on economical contracts. In short, there's always been question marks around Connelly. They're just getting noticed now.
The Timberwolves have always been a terribly run organization. This new iteration is no different.
Hire a guy with a good draft record then trade away all your draft picks. Makes sense lol
5 first round picks plus role players for Gobert.
If the twolves traded him what kind of value would they get? Salary relief, one mid first round pick and a second?
I hate when YouTubers extend the subject way too much just to get past 10 min mark
either he was a huge jazz fan growing up and couldnt stand the fact that they didn't win it all with stockton and malone… or the ownership group pressured him to go get gobert but im a nuggets fan and this is not the way connelly does things, trading away all those firsts was him literally giving away the thing he does best which is make late first round draft picks and early 2nd rounders. I remember almost every pick he made especially later in his tenure i was confident would hit because thats just his track record. Even the center he took for minnesota this past draft before he traded him, walker kessler, has been a good pick. hes given utah so much over the years though lol. i think one thing you didnt mention is that him along with malone were truly culture setters in denver. every single one of the players on denvers roster loved and respected him. He brought winning and just a professional/competent culture to denver which ill always appreciate him for. I was pissed when he dipped for minnesota, but it worked out for the best cause booth immediately trimmed the fat and brought in kcp and brown. connelly never wanted to trade barton or morris, probably cause he allowed himself to get so close to them personally which you minnesota fans will eventually realize is one of his biggest weaknesses. He also jumped the gun giving mpj that max deal which is a total albatross now.
TC probably going to have to trade KAT and Gobert to build a good team around Edwards. Tim's strength was the draft during his Nuggets tenure, he was pretty much mediocre and passive with trades and FA. Only the AG trade and Millsap signing were meaningful
If he would have dumped D-Lo in the Rudy trade it would have been better?
But really why didnāt he trade for KP and ant would have been mad hyped!
Iām holding slight hope about when KAT returns and what we do with Dlo. If any team was missing an all nba guy they would look bad too.
But in a vacuum this looks bad.
Not only did he screw up the Timberwolves but he screwed up the entire NBA trade market cause now teams want a Rudy Gobert haul for any starter now.
At the time arturas k was more seen as the guy that drafted Jokic
When are you going to give the Knicks their flowers instead of hating?
Really worth talking about how much KAT factors into all this
I had no idea they drafted and traded away Donovan Mitchell! Thatās crazy!!! Could you imagine that offense? They wouldnāt have been able to draft MPJ at 14 because they certainly wouldāve made the playoffs that season, but they could just draft for defense instead or trade the pick. Or maybe he wouldāve dropped further due to his injury history and they still end up with him. Oh, the possibilitiesā¦
Dumb ..Tim Connley is really good and sure that trade may look bad now but what happens after he gets a bunch of picks for unloading KAT? This guy drafted so well in Denver but hey y'all on YouTube know more then him. Why haven't teams offered ya any job? See they playing chess and y'all playing checkers and can't see mtiple moves ahead
The thing is that if you donāt trade for Rudy, you donāt have a chance in landing stars anyway. They are small markets team which cannot attract big players in free agency. As much as I donāt want to admit, there is a market for Rudy Gobert. Their thought is that they should go for Rudy and capitalise on the chance. They can still flip him for something else later on than not acting on assets.
Listening to this, out sounds like he freaked Jokic and that's about it for the good stuff. MPJ and Murray were good picks but MPJ was when they had 2 picks and MPJ feel to them, and Murray was basically "next best available player" on the draft. A couple of meh trades and that's it. Jokic was really just a lucky pick, plenty of teams draft decent euro players in the 2nd round that don't work out, Jokic just happened to develop into a great player. All the meh and few decent things he did could easily be attributed to the staff under him on other teams, but in Minnesota maybe he doesn't have a great staff and more options are up to him. IDK. All I know is that as a GM, doing the Golbert trade is the kind of thing I would've fired him for on the spot because I knew it was a stupid move the moment I heard it, and not just because of all the assets, I knew it was bad that after hearing Golbert to Minnesota, but plus all the assets makes it the worst trade of all time. Keep this guy away from your team is you want to succeed.
bros been working for the jazz this whole time š
Golbert was not a trade for a star. Golbert is at best a great role player, he just happened to win multiple DPoY because so few players play defense and Gilbert just happens to be a defend the paint role player.
