  1. That was the best breakdown of the Raps I've ever seen. Why take on the Raps in the paint when you can load up around the three point line?
Id like to see half the players (i love them all) on this team gone at trade deadline.

  2. FVV IS NOT an "All Star".
He's a "quality starter" that makes the ASG in a down year in a weak conference due to injury

Seen enough "1-time" All Stars to know this
Chris Gatling, "Davis Bros", Okur, Devin Harris, D'Lo, Jared Allen (cos ASG in his team's city), 12ppg Kyle Korver (cos ATL had "no AS", they got FOUR SPOTS(

  3. I'M SO CONFUSED!!
    Fratello in the 90s:
I coach the team I have (low scoring defensive Cavs).
If I tried to coach them like "Showtime Lakers" we'd lose

    Moneyball:
If we try be like the Yankees in here (the scouting room (poor team compared to rich), we'll lose to the Yankees out there (on the field).

    QUESTION:
Why is EVERYONE "trying to become a 3pt offense"??
Minnesota ARE NOT Golden State – why try to play like them??

  4. 6:45 YOU TOLD US THE ANSWER!!!

Raptors shoot 2s – closer rebounds – good offensive rebounder

Opponents shoot 3s – LONGER REBOUNDS – thus, wings/big guards have increased rebounding numbers

You don't get many "tip ins" from 3 point shots.
Dennis Rodman didn't make a name for himself catching long rebounds by the foul line but REPEATED attempts AT THE RIM.

Centers are further from the rim, so more "back tap/kickout" to 3pt line for open looks

Gobert can't get defensive rebounds if "closing out at the 3pt line"

This should be quite obvious given RUSSELL WESTBRICK averaged double digit rebounds for 3 years…

  5. Cavs took a REBOUNDING MACHINE in Kevin Love and made him stand in the 3pt corner
Now teams want "Bojan Bogdanovic" over "Xavier McDaniels"…

  6. Disagree..This has nothing 2 do with bigs….There is problems in the locker room and coach is siding with veterans. Just look at who is leading in minutes in playing time..enough said.

  7. I'd be shocked as well if the Raps don't blow this thing up. Siakam super max next year is 35% of the cap, vs. the return we would get in picks and assets is a no brainer. Once you do that you might as well take the haul you would get for OG. I expected big things from this squad this year, but am excited to see a rebuild around Barnes and Koloko with the assets we'll be getting back. I'd keep Trent and Achuiwa if possible, but we'll see what happens.

  8. I imagine the poor defensive rebounding must also be related to their poor perimeter defense collapsing often, resulting in interior defenders making desperate rotations/close-outs to the 3pt line to contest, leaving in a hole in their rebound box outs.

  9. Raptors need a real real real point guard. The pg needs to looking to DISTRIBUTE the ball. But when we've a ballhuger at the top of the key, who takes 23 shots per, then the minus go up. Time for the midge who wants more money to get the hell out. And NN is at fault as well.

  10. Obviously they would love to have a couple more talented perimeter players, and we wouldn't be having this conversation, but not having those things is not proof that the overall philosophy of length, size and bench depth is wrong. This is a flawed analysis. Most of the bad teams in the NBA are prioritizing the perimeter and trying to win from there, but they're still bad because they haven't been able to find the talent to execute on that philosophy.

It comes down to some key pieces not performing up to their standards, like FVV, and not having that many high draft picks lately outside Scottie. The Cavs are running a very similar philosophy and it's working, because they've had recent access to a lot of high picks and expendable asset value, and they were fortunate to draft an early bloomer like Garland, and find a rare perfect trade in Mitchell. Two perfect compliments to the foundation they've developed similar to the Raps.

End of the day, the Raps know what their weaknesses are. The question is, can they find another all-star calibre guard, and if not, is their overall philosophy to blame more than ordinary franchise asset fatigue after a very long period of contending and winning?

  11. The problem with this Toronto team is there is no dedicated player who they can go to when commanding the offence. Their offensive schemes are so predictable and can easily be exposed by other teams come playoffs, when teams start playing defence (this is if they can even make the playoffs). So the solution is for them to get a player who can command an offence, Chris Paul would be ideal but that isn’t happening. (Having a playmaker will also elevate Scotty barns and precious to the next level).

  12. I think it's funny you say they sold shooting for size, when their biggest failure is Fred Van Miss who is a terrible shooter, undersized and can't defend, inefficient scorer, and costs way way too much

  13. Scottie’s point forward/guard he played point his hole life when he initiates the offence they play ten times better just wait 3 years Scottie will be a all nba point forward top 10 to 7

  14. The Raps also started using a new shot analysis system this season, in case folks have forgotten. They went all-in on analytics and evidence-based improvement. It takes time to change your shot successfully (getting it to be efficient). The guys are shooting like they're thinking more about their shots rather than just doing what their muscles have been programmed to do from years of hooping. If folks (including the players) have patience it'll pay off, but the problem there is that there's too much money and ego on the line and too little patience with poor outcomes.

  15. They don’t have 8 PF and C they only have one rookie C and 7 PF. But, you are right in shooting.

  16. It's like the 2015-2016 bucks. They were starting Michael Carter Williams, Greg Monroe and Jabari Parker next to Giannis.

  17. lol you were pushing an agenda moreso than analysis. Raptors have a team full of wings not bigs this no the magic bucks..

  18. Fvv s hurting the team much more than helping the team.. u can tell players are very uncomfortable playing with him…

  19. Poor analysis. What was the difference between last year's roster that went on that tear and this one? Health. That's it. The Raptors have 39 starts by players who aren't even in the healthy rotation and have had 18 different starting line ups so far this year. The Raptors entire game plan is based on swarming defense that generates a lot of turnovers, getting on the offensive glass and generating more possessions than their opponent. Part of that is to make up for a lack of top-end shooting talent outside of Fred and Gary (shooting is at a premium right now, and subpar players with solid shooting are fetching King's ransoms in the trade market and in free agency. Webster stated that they tried to find something that worked but the prices were just too high), and part of that is |project 6'9" whereby they maximize length, athleticism and skill in a way that creates extra advantages on both ends. What this requires is for the defense to be on-point and connected. The Raptors play a help-heavy scrambling defense and the pieces just haven't been healthy to pull it off. they've had to supplement with end-of-the-bench players like Hernangomez who gives a good effort, but just isn't the kind of defensive talent that Achiuwa is.

The other part of the struggles have been offensive execution – also tied to injuries and the inability for the Raptors to field a consistent roster because of them. Bad shots go up without floor balance and teams beat them down the floor the other way for easy buckets before they can get their defense set up. Their defensive scheme has always given up a lot of threes because of the over-helping, but usually they are able to run someone at the shooter, and even though they gave up a lot of them, their opponents percentages remained low. This year, they haven't had the healthy personnel to execute their schemes on either end, and Nurse has just been searching for answers that were in street clothes.

I would be surprised if the Raptors continued to be bad once everyone is back healthy and have had some time to build back up their wind and chemistry. And I would be blown away if the Raptors decided to break up the band after 20 or so bad games when they are still in development mode (over half the rotation is 25 or younger). Ujiri has proven that he can be patient, and won't just trade a player for the sake of it. Unless there is a deal out there that makes the team better, he will likely stand pat no matter what and makes any changes in the offseason. It doesn't matter that Fred and Gary will be free agents because the only team out there who has the cap space to sign either one is Houston and they are loaded with young guards. I could almost guarantee both will re-sign with Toronto unless a team out there decides to dump salary in a trade to sign them. Also, the team's need for shooting almost guarantees that they will overpay to keep both, and given what the tax threshold is next year, they probably won't even end up in the luxury.

We could stand to add another bench center with some girth, defense and rebounding chops, and if there is a ballhanding shooter out there who can also defend, we could add that, but otherwise, this team has proved what they can be when healthy and connected. There isn't a higher character core than Siakam, VanVleet, and Anunoby out there anywhere. This team's contention window hasn't opened yet so there's no need to panic and trade away a proven core. At worst, they get another high draft pick to add to their youth as they develop over the next few years into a championship roster.

  20. They should've traded for KD. If Barnes was the main holdup that's silly. He'll never be an all star. I really like the team but they didn't need all those forwards. Also yeah 1 shooter not gonna cut it.

  21. If you don’t like seeing the same mistakes over and over again, then you don’t like NBA basketball

  22. I feel like the nuance of the raptors height is missed in this video. Yes raptors have a tall team on average but none of them are true interior players, defensively at least.

You have one player at over 6’9, and that’s Koloko who’s a measly 230 pounds. You lack a true interior presence on the court defensively, so what you see is a lot of guys over helping trying to help contest, leading to a bunch of wide open 3s.

I went to the game on Tuesday, and you just see Mason Plumlee getting easy bucket after easy bucket because absolutely nobody could handle his size. As much as this switchability of this team is great and versatile, team’s have figured it out like you mentioned.

Getting into the offense is a whole other can of worms but I think you covered it well, lack of perimeter shooting and guard playmaking.

Something needs to change and change quickly or the raps will just need to blow it up come the deadline/off-season.
