Look, Dallas tryed, but sadly nearly every decision didnt work. Some was bad luck, some were just bad decisions. Lets break it down…
1st They saw early on that Luka is the real deal, so they tryed to get a good co star halfway through his rookie season. So they traded for KP. The idea was good, but sadly KP didnt work out, cause whenever he got into a rythm, he got injured. This trade still "haunts" us, cause we got a really bad contract (Bertans) out of it and still do not own all our 1st round picks. Draft night 2024 will be the time when we can finally trade all our picks. bad luck
2nd They saw that Luka needs a good defender in the backcourt next to him. So they traded offense (Curry) for defense (Richardson). The Idea was good, but for some reason Richardson never worked. I dont know why, but he just didnt. Offensively he was bad and even defensively he wasnt good. Had they kept Curry, his contract wouldve been a real asset for a bigger trade. bad decision
3th As much as I like Green as a person, if you see who was picked after him, mostly Maxey and Bane, he was a failed pick. I dont blame Donnie for that, but Cuban/Voulgaris. This was a real mistake with no excuses. bad decission
4th They resigned THJ to a big contract, cause they couldnt get a good FA in 2021 (no Lowry, no Lonzo). Still a mistake. We had 24 Mio in cap space (28 if we cut WCS), enough to sign Bullock to the same deal AND sign someone like Holmes a s a starting C alternative. We couldve still signed Boban and could get another wing via the small MLE (5 Mio at that time) Batum, Bruce Brown, Craig… all signed for 5 Mio or less… bad decision
5th The bigest mistake of them all, they didnt extend Brunson. Even if they thought Brunson wont be more then a good backup. 13 mio is a good price for an efficient 25 minute backup PG. I understand that the FO wasnt sure about the fit of 2 guards who are not the best defensively, but even as a trade asset this wouldve been a good deal. There was no reason whatsoever not to extend him. Specially cause he asked again in January, when it was clear that Brunson/Doncic works. Could be the 2nd (after Nash) biggest mistake in Cuban-Dallas History. If Luka demands a trade in 2025, the biggest. BAD BAD BAD DECISION
6th They are on the verge of doing the same mistake again. The Wood trade was really good. We gave up a bunch of bench guys for a really good player. Now they have to offer Wood the full 4 year extension. They have to. If he doesnt sign it ok, then they HAVE TO trade him. I get why they only wanna give him 2 years. But even for 20 Mio, if he does what he does right now, he is more then tradable! Same way Brunson was when he asked for his extension.
So the Mavs tryed a lot. Its not that they just sit there and do nothing. They traded for a co star, they traded for a (on paper) good backcourt partner, they tryed to get a good backcourt partner via FA, they traded for another good PF/C… BUT at some point bad luck isnt an excuse anymore. The KP trade was bad luck. But in my opinion every other move after that was a bad evaluation by the FO (mostly Cuban himself) of the assets we had, or couldve had. The next moves HAVE TO work, or I really think Luka will demand a trade in 2025 or will be gone for nothing in 2026. I dont know what those moves will be or when they have a real chance to do them, but it has to be BEFORE the summer of 2025.

Guys you need to be realistic. If JB was in Dallas right now, with the acquisition of Wood, this team will be one of the favourites in the west. That's how good Luka is. Mavs did screw up big time. When trying doesn't work out it is called failure. Period. At least in such a competitive world like the NBA. Luka is a winner and he plays in a team with not other all star… not even one close to be an all star.
And the thing about disrespect…C'mon!! It is the truth so far. HE NEEDS HELP so if a player feel offended about it just elevate your game and help at your maximum. Only Wood is giving a constant help, not even Spencer. It is Luka's 5th year…. already.

The Brunson thing isn't just the new contract but how they failed to lock him way before that.
The Seth Curry trade was also a bad one.
Hopefully no more trades for injury prone players or the hope of a big swing for a max player. The problem is that they failed too much.
They hope that eventually there will be teams wanting to tank or clear their book and receive their expiring contracts.

Nobody is arguing that the Mavs havenāt tried. Itās the opposite. They keep swinging for the fences, whiffing badly, then growing impatient with the players they traded for and selling them off for low prices. Theyāre success rate is deplorable. And they are allergic to drafting players, developing them over time, making incremental gains.
With their track record Iām really scared of the next ābig move.ā We know itās coming. Itās the only thing they know to do. And if this big swing is like the other big swings, it might be the last one they make during the Luka Doncic era of the Mavs. 4 strikes and youāre out.
The Giannis thing cost us a lot more than you realize. Reporting shows that the reason Brunson was offered a deal that made him and unrestricted free agent in the first place is because the Mavs did not want to have to extend him the year they were planning on going after Giannis. Plan Powder might actually be worse than the KP trade.
B.s. what about Gordon or bogdanovic….AND….they gave KP to get BERTANS….with Spencer?…..come on …there must have something better….BERTANS at 18mill a year? Mercy
I hate the defense of trying to win Giannis on FA. I hated the thought at the time, I had seen how the Mavs were with free agency and we already knew that everyone just signs extensions and then, if they want to leave, they ask for a trade. If the Mavs ever get a real star out of Free Agency it will be the first time, and at the time it was already the hardest it had ever been. Literally the best FA signing since Luka is Reggie Bullock. I super, super, super hate the āwho could have knownā rhetoric.

They gave away Barnes and Seth Curry for basically nothing and then allowed Brunson to leave for nothing. Ridiculous mishandling. And regarding this fucking dry powder – they now don't want to extend Wood because of free agency 2025. They will just allow players to leave because of some hopes that will never materialize.
i remember Isac saying in off-season that if mavs have this current roster after the trade deadline, i would say that this was a terrible performance by the front office (or something close to that)

The fact is, that without Luka this is the worst team in NBA, the WORST. We extend Mcgee and he dosn't even playand we have McGee for 3 more years.. We play Pinson in center (who played 106 min until this game, and spend 600 min on the podcast this season), really, why do we have this guys?
