Eh. I like Sengun, and obviously he’s higher value than a guy no longer with the team… but he still just seems like a souped up Kanter.

I’m sorry, but this is a trash take.

Sengun is a player who’s weaknesses will only be more exploited the higher the competition level gets. He isn’t Jokic, he isn’t Sabonis, he’s a limited upside player who doesn’t neatly fit into playoff basketball. Is he better than Primo right now? Obviously, but taking him at 11 would have been dumb, better to take a swing on a player who you think might turn into a real long term difference maker, and live with the risk it doesn’t work out.

If we are talking about who we should have taken if we have the benefit of hind sight, the guy is Trey Murphy. Anyone who thinks Sengun is better than Murphy is a casual fan.

It’s a good thing spurs draft for character first, right guys?

    Right?

Sengun would’ve been phenomenal with how we use great passing big men offensively. Primo was always such a terrible pick.

Nobody knew about Primo Pervert’s problems before.

Nobody here is gonna agree with you cause they’re all in denial but the Primo pick was awful when it happened and it became worse after what he did, I really wanted Sengun or Moody.

Jesus christ can you guys shut up. Its like every other week someone brings this up.

Sengun’s scouting report was very clear before the draft – and his performances since have confirmed it. He is a very talented offensive big with the ball in his hands, but he provides absolutely nothing on defence – and it is very doubtful in the modern NBA if you can have a succesful team with a big who is bad as he is defensively. The scouting report was basically that if you had trust/hope in some areas of his defence then he could be very good, if not then he is much closer to Enes Kanter than he is to Jokic or Sabonis. And it seems like most NBA front offices agreed, despite mock drafts having him high-to-mid lottery (IIRC one of Ford, Hollinger KOC had him at 4 at one stage – FWIW) on draft night no team wanted him until 16.

Has his offence been pretty impressive this year – yes, especially for a guy taken at 16. But I don’t think we have seen yet any evidence than he can be playable in the playoffs.

Was Primo a huge risk? Absolutely. Has it gone to shit in the worst possible way? No doubt. But you can see what the idea was – and in the modern NBA 2-way guards/wings are more valuable than one-way bigs. And that’s just the nature of the draft. In hindsight it was a mistake, but the NBA doesn’t let you go back to your previous save and redo the season

  8. lol drafting sengun would be a wasted pick regardless. if u see how were building the team were looking at 6’4 to 6’8 long arm players who can switch and do multiple things with the ball in the hand (similar to the raptors) but we can shoot it a bit better when on.

sengun would just not be an ideal fit

I thought they’d draft Kai Jones, honestly. Apparently the Spurs even took him out to dinner and everything so I thought that would’ve been their way to clinch things.

You mean the dude who got dunked on viciously by Ant twice tonight?

  11. ICouldEvenBeYou

We definitely should have. And so should have the Thunder. I feel like r/NBA_Draft actually got this one very right for once.

On a side note, the two recent draft picks that came out of total left field, recently–Primo and Samanic, were both universally hated by our fan base (along with shocking other fans) and clearly did not pan out. I’m not so sure Primo would have panned out as more than a mediocre NBA player, anyway. This level of reaching in the first round is a bit concerning to me.

  12. Glad to see other teams recognizing/enjoying Al P’s game.

  13. He would have been happier playing for Pops than Silas.

Honestly the primo pick is a huge gamble and now due to his off the court stuff I feel like we’ve been robbed of a final judgement on the pick. May have been a huge bust or great, we will probably never find out. But there were definitely much safer picks out there that would have been great compliments to the blossoming young core we have now.

The really controversial take with spurs fans is that we should’ve taken haliburton over DV. As much as I like vassell we’d be way ahead of schedule if haliburton was doing for us what he was doing for the pacers right now. It’s odd that as fantastic as the spurs’ late round picks have been, several of the mid firsts we’ve had have been pretty questionable.
