Which NBA teams desperately need to make a trade?

The Denver Nuggets won 18 of their last 22 games during a home heavy stretch. In that time, Nikola Jokic has become the leading candidate for MVP and Jamal Murray has returned to his pre-injury self. How do we grade this stretch of basketball, who stood out the most, and what was the biggest lesson?

The DNVR podcast team also looks at the upcoming road-heavy stretch that begins Tuesday and goes all the way up until the NBA All Star Break. It’s a stretch that includes the NBA trade deadline.

In segments 3 and 4, the guys look at the Los Angeles Lakers trade for Rui Hachimura, a rumored Bones Hyland trade for Naz Reid, and then look at which teams in the NBA most need to make a trade at the deadline. Including the OKC Thunder, Phoenix Suns, Portland Trail Blazers, and Atlanta Hawks.

  1. Jamal Murray is not back. He still makes so many stupid mistakes. His trajectory is going up quickly, but he still has a way to go. The good news is that there are still plenty of games for him to ramp up. That however isn't a guarantee. We won't really know if he is truly back until the playoffs, when defences really lock in and start to target him.

  2. The earliest that the Nuggets can trade a first is in 2027, but only if the picks owed to Charlotte and Orlando are conveyed.

  3. Regarding the doubt concerning the Nuggets defense, Adam is correct in that is extremely lazy to say DEN doesn't have the runway to become a very good defensive team when you consider that rating being so low is based on being so early in the season where offense is always ahead of defensive connectivity during a road heavy stretch. It is more than relevant that since early December, their defensive rating is amongst the best in basketball.

Last note: at this time last year, the "experts" were saying the Celtics were done, either Jaylon Brown or Jason Tatum needed to be traded and Marcus Smart was a bad fit. That team went to the Finals and had the best defense down the stretch. DEN has more than enough time.

  4. Hate the Bones take..I fkkn love bones and will be extremely disappointed if they trade him

  5. Regarding Bones and a potential trade I think you need to look at a few things. Are we in win now mode? What is our window? Does Bones help us win a championship this year or next year? Can Bones progress as a defensive player? Will Bones ever be a starter with Murray on the team? Will Bones force a trade if he doesn't start seeing starter minutes eventually? We badly need someone to run that 2nd unit who can also play some defense.

  6. No way would I consider trading Bones or Christian Braun! None! Both are on cheap rookie deals, and will become more valuable this off-season and in future seasons. Nuggets are deep in the luxury tax and need valuable players who can contribute minutes without costing a veteran contract! I bet anything it's not going to happen because even if the deal makes some sense, it limits you so much for the future to take back a bigger contract.

  7. Just wanted to point out that ever since Eric has decided to start referencing the S word that joker has gotten dinged up, bones has gotten dinged up, and mpj got dinged up and now also family tragedy. Could you pretty pretty please just walk away from it and leave it alone. Clearly the mere mention of the word is powerful enough to piss off the basketball gods.
