What a surprise rich guy doesn’t like poor people living near him.

  2. swiftycent

ha…Maybe this is why he’s been a bit out of focus this season at times…

But seriously…most of us don’t like the NIMBY attitude but I gotta give some grace here as Curry is a global mega celebrity. His children have death threats posted online because he dares to be good at basketball and have fun doing it…I can definitely see why he would prioritize privacy and not being adjacent to that much of the public.

  3. Ok_ash-13

    Iā€™m a disappointed but I canā€™t say Iā€™m surprised

  4. damn I lost a little respect for him today ….

  5. ChairmanOfCringe

From shilling crypto scams to being a NIMBY. Steph def adopted that San Francisco mantra.

  6. Pereise1

Meh, if that’s actually from Steph then it’s not really that nimbyish. Imagine the weirdos who would rent one of those upper level apartments and just record into Steph’s lot. Or just grab a pair of binoculars and try to get a peep at all that foot action going on at the Curry’s. It’s not like he’s like some of the other scumbags my parents used to work for there who spend their free time calling the cops on their housecleaners or suing Caltrain.

I canā€™t imagine there are many people that live in Atherton that want townhomes there. I also have no problem with that. Atherton is not where the Bay Area housing problem gets solved. This is just a developer flipping a lot into what undoubtedly will be massively overpriced luxury townhomes. Itā€™s not housing for people with limited incomes.

No one should be shocked or even surprised by this email. A multi millionaire trying to defend the comfort they paid some extra bucks for. If anything, I am actually glad I got to read some of Steph’s closely held thought process, not the scripted ones he shares on TV.

Reminds me of a resident of neighborhood full of BLM, Peace and Love, and others progressive yard signs who was literally in tears when advocating against a proposed low income housing project nearby. They welcome the idea as long it’s not in their backyard.

  9. OneOverTwoEqualsZero

Let Atherton be what it is and build more affordable housing elsewhere

  10. 2KilAMoknbrd

There’s a reason that exceedingly wealthy people move to exclusive communities . Fuck this post .

  11. Duckysawus

If it were truly the Currys, they should have phrased it so that they’d be against it if anyone made profit off of it–and completely for it if no real estate developers made money on the conversion.

  12. Ocean_Bee

Why would he be for it? That would bring down the price of his home.

  13. I can say without a doubt that all of you would do the same.

  14. scott_jr

The 16 townhomes are being proposed by developers, who can get more money per sqft of land than they would with 1 mansion.

Near Selby / El Camino are tons of townhomes / condos … about 1-2 blocks away but they want to build 16 townhomes in the middle of a residential neighborhood.

I used to live in a Menlo Park neighborhood (Steph’s MIL lived 3 homes away I later found out) that (like Atherton) has no sidewalks. The first thing new renters / owners want to do when they move into the neighborhood is …. build sidewalks! If you want sidewalks go anywhere else in the Bay Area. I would guess over 90% of the neighborhoods in the Bay Area have sidewalks.

There’s nimby but there’s also people with a sense of entitlement.

  15. Many 100s times over millionaire is a NIMBY? Color me shocked

  16. Thus_Spoke

Don’t need any bums like JaMychal Green moving into the neighborhood.

  17. bananadude19

I wish everybody understood that most people who advocate for things like equality are actually hypocrites and frauds.

When it comes down to it, people are inherently selfish. Does Steph want affordable housing for the hard working middle class that pays his salary? Of course he does, just not next to where he lives. He is not a terrible human being, but heā€™s always been rich since the day he was born. And do you think rich black people want to live next to poor black people?

Steph is black on the outside, but heā€™s white on the inside.

  18. EquipmentNo9500

Maybe itā€™s a historical building of sorts?

  19. Rugrats-theme-song

TIL: That Steph is a fucking NIMBY

  20. sonegreat

    Sucks. Disappointed.

    Not totally surprised.

  21. konidias

I thought he sold his Atherton home in December…

Also 23 oakwood is like 2 miles from his house… unless he moved houses in the same area

  22. I’m with Steph. Would NOT want Redditors living next to me.

  23. sunny001

can’t blame him for that. creepy dudes may even livestream his backyard.

  24. Everybody else would do the same. Lets not act like yā€™all would want the ā€œpoorā€ people living next to you if you were rich.

  25. Southern_Walk679

    Don’t blame him.
Sucks to have neighbors, particularly if they are weird and nosey.

  26. CooperHouseDeals

Offer to buy the property. All the developer cares about is $$$$ money.

  27. Responsible_Mode_506

Anyone who looks down on Steph for this is letting their emotions take over their brain. This guy is one of the biggest sports icons in the world. Advocating for privacy and protection from your average joes is completely warranted. People are crazy in todays world.

  28. fatkidskinnyjeans

NIMBY- hard to blame any one person but this is why we are in our current situation in the Bay Area. SF should add 10,000 condos/apartments next year but no one wants it in their area

  29. Either-Sugar-3573

He needs to sit this one out. Say nothing, Steph. There are plenty of rich psychos in that town to fight low-income housing so he won’t have to.

  30. Ionlyeatfakemeat

There are no townhouses in atherton, or just a few at most on el camino. Iā€™ve seen his house, I wonder why he didnā€™t buy a spot up in the hills for privacy. A guy with his wealth shouldnā€™t even have neighbors.

  31. BaseUncultured

Low income housing in the most expensive city in the US? Thatā€™s not happening.

  32. WhiskeyTimer

As someone who’s all about affordable housing, this email isn’t as scandalous as the title makes it out to be.

The curry’s asked that the unit not be turned into a complex, and if it does they asked them to install high fencing because they chose that house / city for privacy.

But I’ve never been to that city, so I really don’t know shit besides reading the email. I am disappointed in his comment of low income housing, but I understand his point of view.

  33. Mega rich guy who grew up son of rich athlete wants to live around other mega rich peopleā€¦makes sense. Itā€™s also probably a matter of not wanting the neighborhood being overcrowded (or ā€œovercrowdedā€). That is, a massive house of one family vs. townhomes with 16 families.

  34. Antdawg2400

i mean thats why you pay that dough to live in atherton…. to be away from mfs. thats like mini belair puttin up section 8 trap aptartments next to big willy house.

  35. Initial__B

they are claiming east palo alto as their backyard now

  36. vitalbumhole

Steph w the fat L. This shit needs to stop, people like him are aiding in homelessness & housing insecurity persisting

  37. Son-Of-Cthulu

well, i love him as a basketball player, beyond that? no way hahaha. fuck him tho. some of my family members are also “aporophobic”. hard to understand these people. still remember the way my late grandma “controlled” her employees.

  38. ambiguouslarge

Why does it matter what his views are of rezoning? Does it affect him as a basketball player? Learn to separate the player from the person.
