The game got too close for comfort at some points in the 4th, but a Win is a Win

  2. Alright, I’ll do the pasta.

This is a good, honest .500 basketball team.

We play .500 ball goddammit. Salt of the earth, punch the clock, even win/loss ratio basketball. We lose a couple, guess what? We’ll win a couple, too. But don’t get too excited or let it go to your head. No long winning streaks here, no sir. That’s hubris, which this blue collar, hard working everyman team doesn’t have. A few wins in a row, these guys, true to form, will balance it out with a couple a losses. Yes sir, that’s my 2023 Jazz. A good, honest .500 basketball team.

Lauri, Ochai, and Walker should be our future.

Honestly think we just won the game becuase Dallas game plan was to attack when JC in iso.

That double team was killing us and we couldn’t figure out how to stop it besides leaving green open.

When Jc would be the lone guy no help would come they spaced and dinwiddie whiffed or settled on those shots.

Whatever a wins a win but it wasn’t very fun down the stretch

    GAME NOTES:

Lauri Markkanen another great game all around. 29 points on 11-20 shooting, 4-8 from 3. He also tried to take yet another life tonight on a monster dunk that unfortuantely rimmed out. He scored 17 through 3, and closed the game really strong scoring 12 the final quarter. I think I still want to see him be the man in late game situations, but I’m happy he’s showing he can get a bucket late

Walker Kessler is the man. He started even with Olynyk starting too, and finished with 14/11/5 blocks. The most impressive thing to me was only 1 foul as well. He was everywhere in the paint and made it really tough for the Mavericks to do much in the paint. His awareness on pick n roll defense is great. He shows well to protect the pass, and is quick enough to contest the shot. He had a great left hand pass to a cutting JC in the second quarter which is great. Anytime a big is able to pass even decently, it opens up an offesne like nothing else. He also is getting more crafty off the pick n roll, developing a little spin move that is pretty effective.

Although there was no Doncic, it was closer than it needed to be. Perimeter defense still a major issue for this team. Dinwiddie dropped 35 on 11-23 shooting. We tried doubling him for a while, but it led to wide open 3’s from Bullock. We need to either get a point of attack defender in the draft, via free agency, or just do better at rotating as a team. I imagine if Luka played he would’ve got to 50 with how bad we are on the perimeter

Our offense only scored 6 points in the final 6 minutes of the 3rd quarter, and allowed the game to get close. We weren’t forcing shots, but just struggled to beat the switches and the zone defense the Mavs did. I think playing Sexton more against switches would be more beneficial

Beasley had a good shooting night! 5-11 from 3 and 7-13 overall! Good for him! 2 assists which doesn’t seem like much, but it’s improvement. He needs to be passing more, even when his shot is money. His assist numbers are terrible

Conley didn’t shoot well, but finished 4/11/5 with 4 steals was great. He was the best perimeter defender tonight, usually sticking with his man. But Dinwiddie was chewing us up

Agbaji very well could be that point of attack defender I was talking about earlier, he just isn’t there yet. I’m worried he is going to turn into Royce O’Neale 2.0 in a bad way. Hopefully we see a bit more development from him especially this offseason. He is already a great defender, and has shown he can hit open shots, but I hope we don’t relegate him to sit in a corner on offense. I’d love to see him have the ball in his hands more to see what he can do playmaking or shot creating wise. Even if he ends up being a good 3-D player, I guess that’s a good fate in the modern NBA. He’ll get his bag eventually, I just want a little bit more out of him.

Sexton is unstoppable in the open court. Fastbreak opportunities is a guaranteed bucket or foul. I just wish we were better at forcing turnovers

Speaking of turnovers, 16 tonight as a team, JC led with 5. He had questionable passes and questionable shooting, but I’m glad he didn’t just chuck up 3’s. He was forcing his way inside and trying to make stuff happen

Olynyk played just 15 minutes tonight, but I liked him at the 4. I think Hardy staggers him like Snyder used to stagger Favors and Rudy together.

Vando looked good off the bench tonight too. I know we have been phasing him out to play on the bench, but I think playing against a second unit is better for him. Still a high energy guy, but is able to tear it up against Davis Bertans vs Dorian Finney-Smith

Rudy Gay looked like he got injured a bit tonight

THT a DNP CD tonight. I don’t know why his minutes have been inconsistent. I thought he was playing well recently, and I thought with Rudy Gay possibly hurting himself we would’ve seen some of him on the court but he didn’t touch the floor. I wonder where THT fits on the jazz, especially after this season.

Overall, a good team win against a Luka-less Mavs. Dinwiddie cooked us, Markkanen cooked them, Kessler blocked them, Conley diced them up.

We still don’t have a definite direction of where we are going this season which is troubling. I guess we wait and see if we are one of the few sellers this trade deadline, or if we sit pat. It just sucks that the TWolves started to figure things out, because it puts more pressure on us to possibly have our only pick be our only lotto pick. Guess we see!

    26-26 Bitches! Back to .500!
