  1. If they lean into tank that would make sense. No point in keeping Nurse who would be playing starters 40 minutes a night

  2. idislikehate

Other notes later in the article:

    – Knicks and Suns both interested in OG and Knicks are willing to offer multiple firsts (we already knew this)

    – Raptors interested in the Hornets’ Jalen McDaniels (who is a UFA this offseason)

    – Raptors interested in Poetl (we already knew this)

  3. AHImusic

I donā€™t believe anything that anybody says about Toronto right now. I feel like Nick Nurse needs a real roster before his future can truly be in doubt. Itā€™s hard to tell how heā€™s contributing to the failure of this team without a legitimate team.

  4. PlumCantaloupe

Oh spicy. What did he say about Nurse?

  5. NoseBlind2

First time ive heard any remotely negative buzz around nick nurse

  6. efficientshelter69

Using OG and Fred in the thumbnail šŸ‘€šŸ™

  7. Eclectic_Canadian

Yeah, letā€™s replace Nurse with one of the many experienced coaches in the league that have proven their ability to win.

This feels like total bullshit. Raptors are underperforming so you can just throw this out there and maybe people will be believe it

  8. ScottieB4Enthusiast

Khem Birch for Joe Johnson and a 2029 2nd round pick, book it

  9. IHavePoopedBefore

It’s a pay site so I can’t read it, but I wouldn’t worry too much about Nick Nurse going anywhere. Either they go for it, in which case they’re not going to bring in a new coach because they don’t have that kind of time with this core.

Or they blow it up, in which case it’ll be a while before you see any coaching changes. Coaches tend not to get changed during the beginning of a rebuild.

    Personally, I say keep him.

He’s been with us for 4 years. In that time he’s made the playoffs 3 times and won and championship and a COTY. And the Tampa season shouldn’t even count. I don’t think there is a better candidate, let him learn and grow

  10. hypespud

Bullshit to try to make a rift between raptors and nurse lol

    From the Article

Across the NBA, itā€™s no secret the Toronto Raptors are viewed as a swing team in this yearā€™s trade market. Raptors vice chairman and president of basketball operations Masai Ujiri and general manager Bobby Webster have whatā€™s seen as a talented core of attractive pieces in Pascal Siakam, Fred VanVleet, O.G. Anunoby and Gary Trent Jr.

Because of the Raptorsā€™ disappointing season thus far (they are currently 23-28 and in 12th place in the East), rival teams have been informed that the franchise will make a decision about being a buyer or seller ā€“ or standing pat ā€“ near deadline day, according to league sources who, like all the other sources in this story, were granted anonymity so that they would be able to speak freely. The Raptors are currently 2-1 on their six-game road trip that concludes on Feb. 5.

The Raptors surely have high price tags on their core pieces, such as VanVleet and Anunoby. Will Toronto hold firm with the talent itā€™s amassed ā€“ or enter the lottery sweepstakes and build increasingly around Scottie Barnes?

Whatā€™s more, Nick Nurseā€™s future as Raptors head coach is expected to come into focus this summer, when sources say he will be entering the final year of his contract going into next season. After the 2019-20 season, Nurse ā€“ who guided the Raptors to the 2019 NBA championship, won Coach of the Year in 2020, and is regarded among the leagueā€™s best coaches ā€“ signed a contract extension through 2023-24 worth $8 million per year. The length of the deal has not been previously disclosed by the team. Thereā€™s been frustration throughout the roster and staff with the teamā€™s play at points of this season, and that has been directed toward Nurse at times too, according to sources.

Forward Jalen McDaniels continues to be a name several teams like the Suns, Raptors, Jazz, Pacers and Spurs are closely monitoring, but the Hornets value the 6-foot-9 forward whom they have developed over the past four seasons. Teams with interest and cap space this offseason, such as the Jazz, Pacers and Spurs, may opt to wait until free agency to court McDaniels, who will be unrestricted, instead of trading an asset to acquire him now while having to compensate him in July.

Several teams are increasing their pursuit of Spurs center Jakob Poeltl, and it appears a move to the Eastern Conference could be possible ahead of the deadline. The Raptors and Celtics are among the teams expressing interest in Poeltl, sources say. The 27-year-old will be arguably the top unrestricted free agent big man in July.

The Knicks and Suns are among the interested suitors in Raptors forward O.G. Anunoby, sources say. New York has shown a willingness to offer multiple first-round picks for Anunoby, according to those sources. The Suns, meanwhile, have control of all of their first-round picks ā€” eight in total ā€”through 2030. SNY first reported the Knicksā€™ interest last week.

People are so in denial about shit they wanna hear lol

I trust shams. Yes when you were projected as a top 6 team and currently 12th in east. The coach will get blame

There is so much narrative shifting in this place

Here is the note on Nurse:

I buy the nurse buzz. I don’t think he’s the right coach for a team that has far less than a perfect roster. Right now he doesn’t have the roster he wants so he plays the starters 40 mins a night. Doesn’t trust anyone who wasn’t there in 2019 minus Scottie.

Again he’s a great strategist but I could see how he could rub players the wrong way when things aren’t going well.

  15. IcyOrdinary1

I would be shocked if nurse was let go. He is easily the best coach in franchise history. My only knock against him is he plays our starters wayyy too many mins which causes fatigue/injuries. But at the same time, the FO has done a poor job assembling the roster so the most of the blame is with them.

  16. JonnyB2_YouAre1

Nurse has a new job in the NBA before the ink dries and the next coach doesn’t match up to Nurse.

  17. HungryMugiwara

Unless Nurse lost the locker room, I donā€™t see him being let go.

I think the flaws are more so on the roster than Nurse himself but I do agree he has some flaws such as overplaying starters and not developing talent.

  18. joegraff

I feel your title misinterprets the articleā€™s sentiments about Nick Nurse. It says his future with the organization will come into focus this summer since heā€™ll supposedly be entering the final year of his deal. That should be predictable. The article suggests that internal frustrations about the teamā€™s play this year have been directed towards Nick Nurse, but it does not necessarily say or suggest his future is in doubt. That statement is a leap on your part.

  19. Pazzaaaaaa

Planted by the Sixers so they can sign Nurse after Doc shits the bed yet again, itā€™s too obvious. Guys like Shams get paid by teams for these pieces.

  20. jayinscarb

This whole sub will be in shambles when the Raps do nothing at the deadline

  21. Cheechers23

    > Because of the Raptorsā€™ disappointing season thus far (they are currently 23-28 and in 12th place in the East), rival teams have been informed that the franchise will make a decision about being a buyer or seller ā€“ or standing pat ā€“ near deadline day, according to league sources

Obviously the Raptors need to keep other teams guessing what theyā€™re gonna do in hopes they pony up their assets but I REALLY hope standing pat is not an option. Thatā€™s literally the worse thing to do.

  22. FrontWarning12

Lol that part about Nurse is cap, he just said him and the FO were on the same page

  23. Jayson2K

Lemme guess, people are gonna brush this off as “we don’t leak” and Nurse is safe and that this is all just baseless speculation?

  24. Hazelwood38

The only thing in doubt about nurse is where heā€™s eating dinner tonight. His job is safe.

  25. ForgotToDieYoung

Nurse still outfoxes most opposing coaches. Whether the players execute or not is another story… But from the comfort of my couch, I don’t see any indications that he’s lost the locker room.

  26. BauceSauce0

Lmao, nick nurse future will only be in doubt if he doesnā€™t want to be here. Donā€™t even start with these stories.

  27. Mutley1357

I honestly do have doubts about Nurse. I hate to say it but I think Casey was a better personal coach than Nurse. What players have come thru Toronto with Nurse at the helm who preformed to expectations or exceeded expectations… Very few… But you look at Casey, and it seemed he was able to get something out of everyone to contribute to winning culture (looking at you Tyler Hansbrough). Even much of the rookie development success came with Casey. I know the roster isn’t built necessarily well, but a coach should still be able to coax some ability or career highs out of mediocre players which has been absent for a while. Plus I really think he’s mismanaged Fred playing minutes as well. The dude is going to be Derek Rose lvl of broke down by the time he’s 30 playing the minutes he has over the past 3 years

  28. Eastern-Technology84

Not saying we should fire nurse but he should take some accountability. He is just as responsible for the teams record as anyone else. Itā€™s naive to think that his job hasnā€™t been in question at all.

  29. SongFit9585

Does Rico Hines have the locker room, do players lean on him more, is he fit to be a head coach?

  30. My criticism for Nurse is that he’s a rigid coach. He is coaching this team the same way that he coached the team with Kawhi. We don’t have the roster to play this way and his style has been unchanged. Starters getting overplayed. Offensive schemes that don’t fit the talent on the roster.

There has to be a bit of give and pull from the coach. Every coach has a particular system they like to run, but you need to find a way to make your system work with the players you have and Nurse is shortening careers to play .400 basketball. If we are going into a partial rebuild I think we need to consider having a coaching staff that is more equipped to play guys through mistakes instead of benching them for 20 games.

  31. RandyLahey514

The Athletic has descended into the realm of clickbait, publish anything as a story to get clicks. I can’t believe people pay for it with a straight face.

  32. jamiecballer

Frankly not a shock to me. I’ve questioned Nurses inability to trust anyone but his top 6-7 as a possible source of a) a fragmented locker room and b) a source of injury and decline in FVV’s performance, both potentially big factors in the unexpected downturn for this team.

Not suggesting I think Nurse should be fired – but I do think Masai needs to have a VERY long conversation with Nick this offseason about working with what he’s got.

  33. the-complete-fool

thank god finally people seeing nurse for what he is. lucked into an insane roster even the 20′ roster was good can only coach vets struggles with younger players and the league is getting younger. crazy fast that he when from innovative to dated.

I was getting worried once we trapped BKN off tip off and people were praising nick… i was thinking, why is he making everyone play like its win or go home?? dude needs to learn how to coach the reg szn with a young roster i don’t think he knows how.

  34. smoothsoul23

Good good. I don’t think Nurse is gonna get fired but this puts the pressure on him for sure.

  35. -ManDudeBro-

There is no way in hell they let go of Nurse. I do see them moving whatever assets they think aren’t working out right now… GTJ almost certainly gone… Unfortunately probably OG as well if they compensation is good enough…

    OR

Get a one year rental on a disgruntled superstar that puts us over the top again… Run it.

  36. klobucharzard

i dont get the raptors/crowder stuff. if the raps dont start Crowder over Siakam at the 4 wont he just keep sitting out?

  37. ChampagneAbuelo

My thing about firing a coach (especially one whoā€™s been proven with the team for years now) is who is gonna be the replacement, and what benefits does the replacement bring over the current guy? Firing just for the sake of firing isnā€™t always a good move.

  38. Kevita24

They’re not firing Nick Nurse, it’s not happening, it might hurt his chances of getting a longer and more lucrative contract moving forward but they aren’t firing him…who would they hire?? there aren’t any high-caliber coaches beyond Ime Udoka who are available, and quite frankly they haven’t given him much to work with…give him a proper start center, and a proper bench unit, and see what he can do next season with a re-tooled roster and a lottery pick.

It’s extremely difficult to find a quality head coach in the NBA, that’s why there are only a handful of them, and Nick Nurse, for all his faults, is still a top-10 coach in the NBA…he would have half the league trying to fire their own coach and hire him if we let him go… the grass isn’t always greener folks.
