[Baraheni] Toronto’s 2024 first-round pick is protected No. 1-6 in 2024, 2025, and 2026, and the Raptors sent unprotected 2023 and 2025 second-round picks as part of the trade to acquire Poeltl from the Spurs, HoopsHype has learned.

Oh nice, legit good trade for us. No idea why the raptors did this

  2. moonshadow50

That is a much better pick than I was expecting.

And so much for all those naysayers in the original thread complaining about “heavy protections”.

  3. Smellmyhand

Not bad. I was worried it was lottery protected but this is much better

  4. deneuvig

That’s pretty awesome tbh. That 2023 second is worth almost as much as a late first right now and if Toronto gets lucky on draft night at least we’ll have something to look forward to

ok I’m good with the trade now. that Toronto pick will definitely convey and the spurs can easily package their 2 2023 2nds (33 and 39 right now) to get themselves another first on draft day

  6. DevilGunManga

The Raptors sub is imploding right now btw haha

  7. solonharmony

Ok this lessens the blow. I’ll still miss the big guy though :'(

Not bad at all. Was expecting to be crazy protected making it a glorified second round pick or even nothing at all.
That’s a decent pick and a tradeable asset with plenty of value.

Damn those protections aren’t bad at all. I hate this sub sometimes. Would be nice if those charlotte picks were top-10 protected too but oh well.

  10. RaycharlesN

Damn that works. I guess they’re not trying to blow it up, at least this year.

  11. This pick is gonna convey but just a question. What would happen if it doesnt? Lets say the Raptors are bottom 5 from 2024-26. Would this just mean that we dont get a pick? Or would we get something else?

  12. Axsh1boomba

So… Can Toronto add another player to match salaries or is this as far as the trade goes?

  13. RepTexas

1-6 in 2024 1st and unprotected 2nd round this year! That alone is worth it for me the 2025 second round just a bargain chip to throw in another deal.

  14. AndrewTheGoat22

I’ve never understood protections. Does this mean if we land between 1-6, then we still get the pick?

  15. Not bad! That pick will definitely convey next year. The Raptors 2nd rounder this year should be a decent pick as well.

Still wish we could have picked up one of Koloko or Banton in addition. But overall a solid package.

  16. Imaginary-Cycle-1977

Hell yeah. Will be fun cheering on every Toronto loss next year

And Chicago (to an extent) and Atlanta the year after that….

And Atlanta the two years after that….

A+ trade after knowing this information. As long as it wasn’t another 1-16 like the horrible hornets pick. For Jak only having half a season left and becoming a FA this is a great trade.

  18. GooMoonRyongg

That’s really good. Unless they get incredibly good next year, that means we will have a lottery pick.

  19. texasphotog

Good value in picks for Jak, but I absolutely hate taking back a worthless stiff with 7mm guaranteed for next year.

So, if [https://fanspo.com/nba/teams/Spurs/27/draft-picks](https://fanspo.com/nba/teams/Spurs/27/draft-picks) is correct, we have:

**2023** – 2 first round picks, 1 second round pick

**2024** – 2 first round picks, 1 second round pick

**2025** – 3 first round picks, 2 second round picks

Can you imagine if we’re decidedly better heading into the 2025 season, and with all of those picks available (if not more, via other trades in the two years prior), what this roster could look like? Especially if we can really get a strong talent this year to have time to develop by then.

Has there ever been another team who deliberately entered a rebuild with so many resources at their disposal, draft-wise? Sochan, Keldon, and Devin could all be great long-term pieces too…lots to be optimistic about looking ahead 2-3 years.

  21. Very good trade for us, no reason to keep Jacob as a backup for Wemby

  22. flannelish

I’ve been on hockey brainrot mode for a bit so it took about six rereads to understand what this was saying lmao

  23. jam_jam_guy

Trade is a massive W then, Utah gave up four players and got 1 pick back lol
