Did Steph Curry & Warriors find missing piece in Gary Payton II trade? | Hoops Tonight

Jason Timpf reacts to the Golden State Warriors’ four-team trade with the Portland Trail Blazers, Atlanta Hawks, and Detroit Pistons to acquire Gary Payton II from the Trail Blazers. Jason discusses why Payton might be the missing piece for Steph Curry, Draymond Green, and the Warriors as well as why it was time for Golden State to move on from James Wiseman.

  1. I think Myers wanted to keep GP2 and Lakob insisted on the the “dual timeline” approach and insisted on letting GP2 go. Pure speculation.

  2. Since we’re bringing back old Warriors we should bring back Marquese Chriss! Probably the best option considering he already knows the offense 😉

  3. Wiseman was the right pick. They got unlucky that he got injured and missed so much time. He was already raw even for a rookie, and he was only 39 games into his rookie season when he tore his meniscus, missing a year and a half. He’s been healthy and playing only 60 out of 219 possible games.

Warriors are just not in a position to keep him and have to sell low.

  4. We couldnt bring back GP2 because of tax issues. If we resigned GP2 we wouldn't have gotten DDV.

  5. I’M SO HAPPY THE WARRIORS GOT GP2 BACK!!!!!!💙💛💙 DUNK CITY IS BACK!!!!!!👏🏿😭😭😭😭😱😱😱😱😤🔥

  6. I was disappointed that GP2 was let go. He’s a major asset that we definitely need. GSW!! Les’Goooo

  7. If they would have retained GP2…then they would not have gotten Donte. I would rather have Donte and GP2 instead of Wiseman abs Gp2. Kerr offense isn't useful to big men and he would never trust Wiseman. He would have gotten DNPs all playoffs.

  8. Goes to show that they contemplated Wiseman v Payton II in the off-season, gave it half and year then switched gears.

    Pivot don’t panic.

Love the move. GP2 is a perfect Warrior.

  9. It wasn’t a Gary Payton for James wiseman swap it was gp2 for 5 picks and wiseman for bey

  10. Gpii is great but this team still isnt enough to beat that Suns superteam

  11. I feel like what the GPII trade also does is give us a much needed morale boost. We've been so up and down all season, and we've honestly had little to be genuinely excited about. Getting back a guy that everyone loves will instantly bring the collective spirit up, which matters for this team. When we feel good, we play good. But when we get in our head, we play dumb

  12. They didn't let GP2 go. They offered him the most they could, he did not have Bird rights. The Blazers had more money available. It's amazing how many people don't know this. Would you say they should have traded Dray, Wiseman, Klay, just to bring back GP2??

  13. Bazemore absolutely understands what the warriors culture is he played with the team twice what are you talking about he’s one of Steph’s best friends dude

  14. Im gonna see Wiseman's journey on Detroit with attention – honestly, the idea of two timelines is simply tantalizing. That you can make way for another home-grown superstars while still having another veteran one on his prime. The problem is, that was probably the worst year for that: 2020 was a terrible year for draftees, and i will go to my grave thinking that if Wiseman hadn't been drafted to a team that was ready and wanting to compete, had the training camp to get accostumed with the ropes and didn't battle injuries, he would have been productive.

Now, of course not everything was out of his control – we see others who were drafted on the same year but are already All-Stars, but even they had the luxury of playing for teams that weren't really on the playoff picture, and were let to commit lots of mistakes in a lot of playing time (which Wiseman didn't). In the end, the ''two timelines'' idea hinges on you drafting someone who is good out of the gates – Tim Duncan was already the best player on the Spurs by his second season – and i'm not faulting a guy who didn't even had training camp his first season for not getting one of the most complex systems on the League right now.

  15. I think GP2 will inspire the team defensively to perform better. Hopefully he is the spark they needed but i hope they at-least get a center in the buy out market .

  16. There is an emergent phenomena that occurs when you insert GP2 into the lineup with the Warriors. He has a synergistic effect

  17. One aspect of GP2's game is his explosive plays which hypes the team

  18. I think Kerr should’ve Given Wiseman an honest chance since they were losing anyway. Wiseman felt cheated or jilted and unwanted. Kerr has poor rotation management. Meanwhile Steph is hurt again and the warriors are too small.

  19. Weird that literally every Dubs fan understood that it was a mistake to let GP2 go. How did they make that mistake and risk the last winning years for Klay, Steph, Draymond? Plus they have seriously stressed the fans out.

  20. Warriors couldn't develop Wiseman properly simply because he was injured more times than he's been on the floor. You can't develop someone who can't play because of injuries.

  21. great to see GP II back to the Warriors, now the dubs have a very solid defensive second unit that will allow starters to take a breath. Wish they could had done something with the center position after they sent out Wisemen. I thought Thomas Bryant would have been a great fit, he had the same function as Looney and is willing to do the dirty works too, but with more power.

  22. Just remember… when they drafted James Wiseman Jordan Poole was still an unknown quantity AND we had no idea who Klay would be like when he returned.. While Wiseman struggled, Poole blossomed and Klay's return has been a joy. Perhaps Wiseman was not the best pick at number two but a big who can score is definitely tantalizing, especially when the future of the team was in doubt.

  23. DRAYMOND/WIGGINS/KLAY/KUMINGA/LOONEY/GP2/DONTE DEFENSE CRAZYYYY 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

  24. They need a Slasher that can get to the line 8-10 times a game. they don’t get to the FT line enough – I’m sure they are one of the lowest in the league

  25. I’m so happy bro is back. He has a it factor on the court and off that was missed.

  26. Best lineups to maximize our team

Start: Curry, Donte, GP2, Dray, Looney

This obviously lets Curry eat and creates more double-triple team traps for ez looks for the rest.

JP & Klay seem to thrive together without Curry. Ty leading the second unit

Wiggins would be the situational starter when we play the bigger forwards (KD, Giannis, Luka, Bron, KPJ, BI)
