Not just a salary dump: More to the New Orleans Pelicans trade for Josh Richardson than it seems

The New Orleans Pelicans traded for Josh Richardson but the trade wasn’t really about him. While this deal was mainly a salary dump for the Pels, Jake Madison explains there is much more to this deal long-term. He breaks down why the Pelicans made this trade, what it means for this season and next, and how it impacts the futures of guys like Herb Jones and Trey Murphy III. Plus, how will Richardson actually fit on the court with guys like Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram?

  1. Jake, every time I come into one of your videos, whether it’s a win, 10 game losing streak, or a trade. I already feel a type of way, but you bring me back down to earth and I leave your videos more grounded. Thank you and love your videos, and the hard work you do.

  2. So…. We used an 8th overall pick on Jaxson and he will just walk after this season… this team needs more than just what’s on the current roster to be a serious title contender.. but I often wonder if the front office really cares as long as they are good enough to keep the fan base engaged

  3. With your Big 3 only playing 10 games together it’s a wait and see before you react to what a other team is doing I believe we can compete with any team in the West because of our chemistry youth, and length we still need a shot blocker so I would look at Dedmon if he’s bought out

  4. Suns are beatable! They’re top-heavy and it’ll solely depend on their starting 5. No bench and still health will be a challenge. Paul and KD are no spring chickens

  5. People not understanding that we just got a workhorse physically and mentally. This is great for our young team.

  6. As much as I’d love to see a blockbuster move I’m glad we’re saving our assets for when we have a chance to get that one last piece of the puzzle which fits perfectly. I trust griffs plan

  7. @Locked On Pelicans, what do you think about signing Serge Ibaka and trading Hayes for a couple of 2nd round picks or so. That way we get another championship experienced vet at the center position and get a couple of 2nds that help us protect a 1rst round pick.

  8. They won't go into the luxury until Zion n Bi show they can play a significant amount of games. You're not overspending for 5th seed or less in a small market and our injuries will continue to have us in that bunch until proven otherwise

  9. What you mean so what teams made trades kevin Durant doesn't spell title for the suns ………. pels still have talent to deal with every team in the west

  10. It simplifies the rotation, when fully healthy we made it to the number 1 spot. I think with all the other big trades in the west, moving Devonte and getting a bigger guard in Richardson is a great move for the foundation of the team's rotation. Low key really good trade imo.

  11. So basically we saw KD and backed up like a crawfish….this is PURE loser talk Jake…just be competitive and sell tickets…we basically called off the season in the middle of the season…I understand AD now

  12. we act like that 10 games losing streak happened at the end of the season and there’s no way to recover from it. But the truth is nobody excepted us to become the 1 seed so soon and We were dominating. That dominance holds just as much weight as the 10 game losing streak. We shouldn’t be scared of nobody. I’m glad we didn’t trade anybody who didn’t need to be traded. But Davonte Graham needed to be traded. Good move by a good team. I’ll take it.

  13. Could we sign Brook Lopez on a 2-yr $25 million deal and move off Jonas in the off-season?

  14. Y'all overreacting to the suns cp3 is old AF KD always hurt and I've seen Ingram cook him booker is nice but he'll have to reckon with CJ and Murphy and we also got Zion for ayton boy

  15. Look, I'm not mad we dumped salary and got back a better player; I AM MAD that after Durant went to Phx (where I freaking live…this is going to be unbearable) that we didn't get OG.

  16. I think they still have a good shot. The teams that added had to get rid of a lot of their depth or added so many players that it sets back their chemistry. I think the pels have continuity and josh Richardson is a significant upgrade from devonte. He’s not a defensive liability, can shoot just as well or better, and can playmake. He’s a nice rotation piece for a playoff team and doesn’t mess up the chemistry

  17. Got better, saved money….Griff should deservedly catch hell wasting 1 1st and 4 seconds on this dumb move but at least he didn't let ego get in the way of making the right decision…. Finally

  18. Fine with JR trade. Dude seems like a useful vet.

Tbh? This doesn't feel like our year. BI and Zion probably need games together and they haven't had that. Maybe thay changes when BI and Zion are back together but if they are THAT good – Josh Richardson v Graham won't matter.

This team has a core – BI, Zion, CJ, Herb and Dyson should be untouchables I'd lime to inclide Jose in that but probably unreasonable. If Suns wanted Dyson or Trey for Mikal, or both, instant no for me.

  19. Lets face the cold, hard facts! This team realistically should not have had any expectations of finishing any better than 5 or 6 in the West behind Denver, Phoenix, Dallas, Memphis, and/or the LA Clippers. Advancing to the Western Conference Finals this year would have been way too ambitious. If they make, it that's all gravy, but as was stated at the start of the season, the reasonable expectation is to make it into the playoffs and advance to the 2nd round! That would be incremental progress. You run a business as efficient and smart as possible. This is a big business. I think the Pels made a very good move looking at the long term. They got freed up from DG's contract and got an upgrade in JR in that they got a bigger wing player who can play SG/SF, shoot better, and play defense better. This trade has a lot of value. They got a role player who can contribute right away for much less than trading for a starter who would probably not be a good fit! There was no need to overspend when the team is not really ready for that kind of move just yet!!! We just need to hope and pray that our guys can get over the hump from the injury bug!!! Lets look for the flashy, big splash move in the off season when we should be pushing to go to that next level!!! Go Pels!!!

  20. Quite obvious at this point we need the picks to draft rookies because we are not going to spend any more than we have already spent.

  21. I feel good about the trade as they were overpaying DG for what they were getting. They need to keep this team intact for now until they see how they do when starters are all healthy. Now they have more flexibility to make roster moves down the road.

  22. I was hoping they'd trade for a great rebounder and/or great 3-point shooter …and maybe lose one or two players from the 4-10 players on their roster in that exchange. A willingness to make that sacrifice to get on top THIS year. No such luck in this lateral sleepy move. So we will have to continue to watch other teams get tons of offensive rebounds and bomb away at a level Pels cannot. Getting to the playoffs is not a given anymore with the shocking positive makeovers within the unprecedented multi-team scrum for a spot into the second season…but if N'Orleans is >.500 when Z comes back they'll get in, and the great vibes of December could very well return. Their glaring weaknesses can still be overcome by excellence from the bench mob on any given night and/or the incredible abilities of their top 3, especially Z. And a parting shot…they played their best + – first quarter basketball when JV did not start against the Kings (they crushed them)…they somehow translate as a more formidable foe when they start all 5 well-rounded athletes with speed and savvy.

  23. Man them moves in West have y'all scared we good once Zion get back and we can stay healthy we can beat anyone of them teams.

  24. U hinted a little bit in this episode, but could u do an episode explaining the ways we can make a bigger splash (the moves we wanted this deadline) next off season. He’s an expiring so our main salary contract has gone, but can he be signed to a Josh hart type contract, we have that MLE can that be used for a sign and trade? Things like that? Not sure how u can structure it for ur episode lol 😅
