Is Joe Mazzulla sending Grant Williams a message about what Boston Celtics need from him?

Grant Williams got his second DNP-coach’s decision of the month (and effectively, it’s three), with his minutes going to Blake Griffin instead. Williams hasn’t played well, but the benching is still a little surprising. John Karalis of Boston Sports Journal and Tom Westerholm discuss the move, why it seems to be happening, and the potential message Mazzulla might be sending to his young forward.

  1. Same thing kinda happened with Hauser for a couple games, but I think Williams is also playing through an injury. So a break might do him good.

  2. Guys, Milwaukee scares me now. They didn’t before but the additions of Crowder, Ingles and now Dragic has me concerned. Giannis,Holiday and Lopez are all-defense caliber players. I hope the C’s can wake up and get on a streak.

  3. Tom’s specs remind me of the one’s George got in “The Glasses”. 👓

  4. Enjoyed the convo about Grant. I think Grant, being one of the youngest on the team, just needs to mature his attitude. Emulate Derrick and Malcolm, who are older, wiser, mature veterans. DW and MB are quiet pros, doing the role they're supposed to do, no lip.

  5. The issue with Grant at this moment is maturity. Everybody has to be on the same page especially when the goal is to win a championship. If Grant plays within his role, and it leads to a chip, he will fairly compensated.

  6. It seems he got distracted by something he needs to be focused on playing harder i wish he got more speed.

  7. Why are you guys dogging out Grant? He’s having a bad patch. He’s most affected by Ime’s demise. There are big changes on the roster. No Rob, malcom, Blake .

  8. i think the issue here is grant wants to be compensated highly, not fairly compensated. he's a smart guy. he understands it's a scorer's league. he understands scorers gets paid so he's trying to turn into a scorer. 3nd guys dont get paid 20+m. thing is:

    1. the celtics don't need for him to be a scorer. they need him to be a 3nd guy.
    2. he doesn't have the physical tools or the skillset to be a scorer.
    3. he's letting the contract year influence how he's supposed to play.

can't blame him. it's his 1st big contract opportunity. he wants to pull in a duncan robinson bag. he wont care if thats the best application of his talents or it impedes his team from competing (because they had to pay him more and couldn't get another talent or isn't utilizing his strengths, which is to be a 3nd guy, effectively). so yeah if he continues this, lets just trade him in the offseason, and get a vet 3nd guy who has already earned their money/PT and whose goal is simply to play for chips even if that means they get paid as a 3nd guy. grant wants to earn 20m. let him. just let him do it elsewhere.

  9. joe is basically telling Grant: "stay in your lane. you're a 3nd guy. be a 3nd guy."

"yes you wont get your bag for being a 3nd guy. but we don't care. this year is about winning the chip. if that's not your primary goal, we can trade you in the offseason."

"when we face giannis, we'll play moose, blake or luke if we need to. you aren't untouchable."

  10. @John Thanks for the latest on Grant, just got to hope is doing better heading into playoffs. Was grateful for the knowledge Sir

  11. C's still letting go of the rope during end of quarters; I think they've made it a habit and habits are hard to change/remove. I'm feeling that this roadtrip will help them on that, 1st game should be fine.
I think Grant is just trying to do too much..specially talking – to his teammates, to his coaches and to the refs. I know he is smart, but he should understand his place and play his role. You'll hear it with what others are saying about Blake which I feel is a subtle hit on Grant.

  12. If gallinari never had that ACL injury this past off-season, I feel like we would've been more willing to trade grant this season.

  13. Grant simply hasn't deserved to play on a consistent basis, because he's been lousy for 3 months. His lack of maturity and mental toughness was crystallized by those two last second FT misses against Cleveland(and his verbal sparring with Mitchell instead of concentrating on the task at hand). IMHO, if they could've traded him at the deadline(say for P.J. Washington of Charlotte), I would've done it.

  14. The Celtics need to do their jobs. Otherwise the competition has you by the 🥜. I totally agree John, that finish was very bothersome.
