[Haynes] Kyrie Irving “will instead allow his future to be decided in free agency this summer”, sources said.

Buried in Chris Haynes’ article:

>Despite the Dallas Mavericks’ struggles since acquiring Kyrie Irving, the plan is still to re-sign the star guard, league sources told Bleacher Report.
>
>Irving is eligible for an extension, but he will instead allow his future to be decided in free agency this summer, sources said.
>
>Dallas is 9-16 since making the blockbuster trade, but the shortcomings do not fall on Irving’s shoulders.
>
>Going into the offseason, the Mavericks intend to surround Luka Dončić and—optimistically—Irving with versatile wing defenders and rim protectors to improve a defense that has been subpar.
>
>The team has fallen out of the play-in field and has very little chance to climb back in with three games remaining on its schedule. The Mavs are a game back of the Oklahoma City Thunder for the final play-in spot, and Oklahoma City owns the tie-breaker.

The Mavericks will likely have to give Kyrie the maximum contract he desires, or he’s gone with no assets in return.

So which team is he destroying next?

He Cants get his max until July so obviously…

  3. Kyrie has all the leverage, he’ll sign a four year max and make Cuban fund a Plandemic sequel

  4. Not choosing to take an extension just means he wants the most amount of money he can get. Doesn’t mean he’s leaving the Mavs. The money in him signing a max deal versus signing an extension is very different.

To everyone saying he’s gone who tf besides Dallas is giving him a max?

  6. He’s staying. Kyrie wont take a pay cut and the mavs are the only team willing to give him a max contract

Teams with enough cap this summer to offer a 4-year max (40M starting salary) without needing to shed salary:

    Rockets

    Magic

    Spurs

    Jazz

    Pistons

    Thunder

    Just over: Hornets and Pacers

Of course sign and trades can open up possibilities but thought this would be helpful before fans start claiming him.

Besides Houston who has the cap space to give him the max? And Houston probably prefers Harden.

Some collect rings, others collect the rubble of franchises

Not surprising in the slightest. Still think Dallas has the best chance. I bet he can squeeze the max out of them and very few teams (honestly can’t think of any) are going to clear max cap space to sign him outright given his history.

  11. For those saying he is leaving, what is a realistic destination?

If the Mavs miss the playoffs and Kyrie leaves in FA this may actually be the worst trade of all time

  13. GoldenBoyRecords

What other realistic suitors are there outside the Mavs

i mean of course. he cant get a max until the offseason lol

  16. corybekem

Any team giving him a max is a team that must already be in the dumps. No Championship locker room is bringing that In for that amount. It’s just a leverage play to get Cuban to open the check book.

  17. Saucetin_Reaves

Watch him sign a vet min with the Suns.

Jazz do have the salary, the Jazz really need a floor general shot creating guard. I wouldn’t be surprised if Kyrie signs here, if the Jazz give him the max

I mean obviously this is the best course of action. Except you’re capped out and have no real assets to acquire a supporting cast lol

Good luck to the team that makes the mistake of giving him a long term contract

  21. holographoc

Lol, and how exactly do they intend on obtaining these wing defenders and rim protectors to go along with a Kyrie max contract?

  22. WeefBellington24

Is Kyrie the most parasitic NBA player ever?
Who else sucks the “host” of as much as it can before moving on to another

  23. DoIknowyoufromReddit

Kyrie will sign the max then sit out the whole season
