Because at the time no one had made the jump from high school to the NBA and immediately been a superstar. The ones who had made an immediate impact were all big men. There were also some really interesting characters in that group. I don’t want to speak ill of anyone specifically, but there were some individuals who had inflated opinions about themselves. Also, they may have liked their teammates and didn’t want to seem like they were in need of a savior (which they definitely needed).

In addition to the other comment, this was before things like YouTube existed. It’s not like most of the league was watching tape on him as he was coming up. They *for the most part* just heard the same hype everyone else did from the media that this HS kid who hadn’t yet accomplished or proven anything in their eyes was supposed to be the next Michael Jordan (who was still a pretty recent memory, btw)

**Edit:** As a matter of fact, MJ’s last year was the one before Lebron was drafted….I’d forgotten he played that late too….my memory just blows all around this morning.
