Glen Willis Hawks vs Heat Playin Analysis

Thought his takes were interesting thought I’d share!

First key for Hawks v Miami, they can’t let the Heat be more physical than they are… which is tough because it’s in the Heat’s nature to play with physicality, not so much the Hawks

An example here, if Herro gets to Clint like this Trae has to be physical with Bam on the cut

([Video](https://twitter.com/willis_glen/status/1644891816133799936?s=46&t=dBLyV43_iGgzOBRNUPRJWA))
Second key for Hawks is to attack the Miami defense before it gets set, even after Heat makes

They have to push the pace as much as possible even if it means shorting some key players minutes

Here Heat are already loading up for the ball screen and Trae attacks the seam

([Video](https://twitter.com/willis_glen/status/1644893043257126912?s=46&t=dBLyV43_iGgzOBRNUPRJWA))
Third key for Hawks is to navigate screens in a bi-directional manner especially when tracking a shooter off ball

Not enough to get over the first screen, in fact Heat will sometimes give it to you so they can hit you flipping to flare screen

Not bad here, but not good enough

([Video](https://twitter.com/willis_glen?s=21&t=dBLyV43_iGgzOBRNUPRJWA))
Fourth key for Hawks is to be very committed to second offensive action

Hawks will run empty corner side/slash PNR, here Heat switch and cover it

DJ dribbles through and creates space in the middle for JC to attack… there can’t be hesitation in second action… attack quickly

([Video](https://twitter.com/willis_glen/status/1644895484958621699?s=46&t=dBLyV43_iGgzOBRNUPRJWA))
Fifth key is to keep working on defense even after doing your first task well

Here Hunter does a nice job helping/switching to cover Bam’s cut off the back screen…. well done!

But then he let’s Bam seal him out of the play and Butler gets the easy lay up

Must keep working!!

[When you re-watch these two teams play each other, this is the massive difference that jumps out at you:](https://twitter.com/willis_glen/status/1644896182760771585?s=46&t=dBLyV43_iGgzOBRNUPRJWA)

When you defend Heat’s first action, they are ready for a second, a third, and on

When you defend Hawks first action, their instinct is to reset and iso

Can’t happen!!

More empty corner side PNR

This will probably be a staple on Tuesday

Heat want three defenders walling Trae coming off the ball screen

Notice how that looks from side PNR where it’s much harder to impact Clint diving to the rim

([Video](https://twitter.com/willis_glen/status/1644899143754854400?s=46&t=dBLyV43_iGgzOBRNUPRJWA))
Sixth key is to attack Herro at every opportunity

Cannot let Miami get set and get Vincent, Martin, Jimmy on ball

Empower everyone to go right at him

Jalen should be especially capable here

Saddiq more capable than Hunter likely

JC good enough to do this

Make Spo pull him

([Video](https://twitter.com/willis_glen/status/1644900338317799426?s=46&t=dBLyV43_iGgzOBRNUPRJWA))
If you are willing to work through secondary/tertiary creators, you can get Strus and Herro on the same side of the floor

Attack that

([Video](https://twitter.com/willis_glen/status/1644901542187900929?s=46&t=dBLyV43_iGgzOBRNUPRJWA))
Where Trae is likely to do his best work in side/slash PNR

Dejounte is likely to get space in the middle, he has to consistently turn that into shots in the 8-12 foot range (especially after a switch)

Can’t be settling for 17 footers

They are going to need 25 from Dejounte

[Since Feb 1](https://twitter.com/willis_glen/status/1644905451606401026?s=46&t=dBLyV43_iGgzOBRNUPRJWA)

Offense: Hawks 4th Heat 20th
Defense: Hawks 21 Heat 20th

They are not some great team (great organization)

But they have veterans who know how to control a game

If you let them out-physical you and out-execute you they will embarrass you

[v Miami](https://twitter.com/willis_glen/status/1644907525496786945?s=46&t=dBLyV43_iGgzOBRNUPRJWA) this year

Dejounte 20 assists 6 turnovers

Trae 39 assists 21 turnovers

If Dejounte is attacking the space in the middle, roll with that

Also, Dejounte has to find a way to be more urgent attacking in secondary action, not his normal thing but he needs to find a way
