[Bontemps] As part of the new CBA, if a team goes over the second tax apron, their 1st round pick 7 years out is unable to be traded, sources told me & @wojespn . Teams that then exceed the apron twice over the following four years will have that pick dropped to the end of the 1st round.

Honestly, no idea what the heck that 2nd part means.

Is it 3 years of being over the 2nd tax apron or 2?

For reference, we will likely end up over the 2nd tax apron this year if we keep Grant and try to add another player. The following year, Brown’s new contract will kick-in and we likely would be over the 2nd apron that year as well.

If they’re contenders, won’t that first round pick be towards the end of the first round anyway?

This CBA seems to be a big “fuck you” to dynasties. What the fuck?

I did the quick math in the event that we care about this (not sure if teams will actually care about this rule or not).

For next year: we have 13 players signed and we will have about $13M we can spend while staying under the second apron

For 2024: Jaylen’s supermax kicks in and we’ll shoot $7M (if we don’t spend this off season) to $20M (if we do spend that $13M) over the second apron. Gallinari and Muscala expire, which covers $10M of the cuts required. I’d say this probably rules out resigning Grant.

For 2025: Tatum’s next contract kicks in and we’ll shoot *another* $20M or so above the second apron. Horford’s deal will have expired and will cover about half of the cuts needed.
Brodgon’s deal will have also expired, and we’ll need either let him walk or trade away Smart or White to get back under.

Terrible CBA for the players from what I can tell. CJ and Grant should step down if this is best they can get. I understand the owners have been blasting the “load management bad” narrative (nevermind the fact that the medical teams they hired came up with the concept of holding out players with nagging injuries to preserve their health and career), but you’re in a moment of increasing labor activity. Unions haven’t had higher approval ratings in 50+ years. Flex your muscle. The league is the players and all I’ve seen from this CBA is concessions.
