Following Hawks practice earlier today, @JameelahJNBA asked HC Quin Snyder what he says to a guy like De’Andre Hunter who has been struggling a little bit offensively and what does he expect out of him in this series:

Obviously coach isn’t going to say “well he just fucking sucks”, but if he trusts him and believes in him then I do too. I think he’s going to coach us to one of the biggest upsets at least in recent nba memory.

Can’t forget the role of health too. Coming off an injury (as De’Andre currently is), it shouldn’t be a surprise if he isn’t immediately playing at 100% of his capability right out of the gate. We’ve seen how well he’s capable of playing when he actually *is* 100%. But he’s had so many injury struggles lately (and throughout his career, unfortunately) that I think a lot of fans have forgotten that version of him, and so when they see him underperforming now they just say, “Oh, that’s just because he’s an innately terrible player and always has been.” It’s the same story with JC — just like it was the same story with Clint and Bogi before that (although luckily it looks like those two have been rounding back into form lately). That isn’t necessarily to make excuses for them or anything; sometimes guys are just playing badly because they’re playing badly. But I do think there are legitimately valid reasons for optimism that we could see the better versions of Dre and JC again if we just have the patience to stand by them and root for them like supportive fans (as opposed to constantly trashing them and demanding that they be fired into the sun every time they have a bad game, as this sub loves to do with pretty much everyone in the starting lineup, haha)

Every coach and teammate hunter has had only said good things about him, must be a great guy to be around. But the reddit bball experts are always ready to say he is “soft”, “doesn’t have that dawg in him”, etc.

    >He’s a fun guy to coach

I’ve seen a lot of people wondering why Quin came to the Hawks despite our problems. I think Quin really has a passion for unlocking players and finding their best spot. Like a challenge to overcome. I don’t hate Nate like a lot of fans do, but he didn’t have that passion.

I have never questioned Hunter’s confidence. He could be 1-9 from the field, but keep shooting as if he hadn’t missed all night
