In Episode 1390, Sean Woodley is joined by Samson Folk (Raptors Republic) to break down the 2022-23 season of polarizing Toronto Raptors guard Fred VanVleet and what comes next for the team’s lead guard. Off the top, Sean and Samson chat about what went well for VanVleet this season. His pick-and-roll operation alongside Jakob Poeltl was a real bright spot, and as usual, he continues to drive positive play and bring order to all the Raptors’ best lineups. That said, it was by no means a perfect season, as his on-ball defense suffered a steep drop-off, his three-point stroke waxed and waned, and the relationship between Fred and Scottie Barnes was callled in to question. Was there any fire behind all the smoke? Was Nick Nurse more the culprit behind the team’s off-kilter locker room vibes than VanVleet? If option a is fred wants way over what he's worth and another high usage role year and option b is let him walk , it's better for the franchise to let him walk

Stop acting like we can't afford of losing him. He's just a role player forced to have bigger role and it showed he struggled for a long stretch every yr. We are above .500 – 7 wins and 6 loses without him and below .500 with him this season. Also last playoffs we couldn't win a game in playoffs with him while won 2 games without him after being down 3-0. Basically we couldn't win anything in playoffs, play-in tour last 3yrs with him being starting PG. Get rid of him. It's not like end of the world.
The raptors will be doomed if Fred still here nxt yr. Only his fans want him back. All the unbiased fans know what's the best, get him out.

@sean woodley for the bench i only see thad young being bought out before june 30 where he is owed only 1 million. chris boucher is probably the most consistent bench player so getting rid of him wont help.
in terms of who is back and who is gone, i see jakob poeltl back. because of that 2 players have to go to balance the books unless is all all or nothing season next year and if they fail then its trade everyone fire sale after the season is over. i am down with that also if they fail get rid of siakam fred, gary , boucher and og and jakob and just bottom out if the group is brought back and fails. and fail is not making the finals. do a proper rebuild for 5-6 years with basically a g league team if it results in failure.
They’re not “shepherding” him into it, their egos are preventing it from progressing and you’re blind to it. Even if that’s not true, what’s the ceiling with this core? Obviously the more good basketball players we have, the better, but there’s this thing called a salary cap.
