Lions did not get good value for their picks. 2 reaches.
Football isn't baseball, where it's pretty easy to isolate a player's individual statistical value. So I don't get how anyone can get all dogmatic about what "the data" says. NFL trends change all the time, and the first team to change one is often rewarded with a title. If Gibbs can run and receive and return, that's a lot of ways to help the Lions win
I don't agree about Texans killing it. Like all picks, we won't know for a few seasons, but I don't think Will Anderson is worth 2 first round and a high 2nd round pick.

Gibbs will be cheaper than resigning Swift, and Gibbs will run circles around Swift.
Look for Swift to be traded with a pick for a Defensive end of good caliber.
I trust Joel Klatt's appraisal of collegiate talent, and how their talent might translate into the NFL. He really likes Gibbs and Capt. Jack. As a new Lions fan (the 49ers have been my #1 team since 1958, and still are), I'm excited about both of these young men.

Gibbs = points. Points win games. I don't think the lions need to upgrade their defense as much as people seem to think…. they upgraded the backfield and the front end was 3-4 rookies last year and a first year with the lions guy in cominsky. When we were 1-6 they were allowing 32 points. The last 10 games, 20 points. The defense got better and will be better this year. I hated the gibbs pick last night but today it feels glorious, honestly. If you're a gm and you're thinking points, the pick was gibbs or JSN – but not both because then you have too many Batmans and no Robins.
Not much to say about Jack campbell except that physically he is Urlacher 2.0 – if his on field play comes close, then that's a lock for 10 years and worth the 18 overall. Time will tell

I see we picked two guys who will be starting for us and contributing in a major way for the next five years starting day one. You can't say that for a lot of the other guys. The analytics suggest these are low-value positions…but there are exceptions to every rule. Analytics say Micah Parsons should not be a first round pick.

I have a more common sense reason we took gibbs at 12. We cant afford not to have the best possible offense for the 6 games jamo is out and the best OT went right before we picked at 12.
We have to make a playoff run this year , so we made an aggresive pick. Thats it.
90% as good in a second round RB doesnt mean anything if that 10% difference costs us the playoff run.
